Gender equality is going backwards. Between 2019 and 2022, nearly 40% of countries – home to more than 1 billion women and girls – stagnated or declined on gender equality. The SDG Gender Index, published today by Equal Measures 2030, a coalition of NGOs, found that no country has, so far, achieved the promise of gender equality envisioned by the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs) Thanks Annette Young for sharing. This crucial promotion often determines future career trajectory, yet data shows that women, particularly women of color, are frequently overlooked. ?? Why does this matter? - When women are not promoted to managerial positions, the pipeline for senior leadership becomes predominantly male. - Diverse leadership teams drive better business outcomes through varied perspectives and innovative thinking. ?? What can we do? - Mentorship & Sponsorship: Senior leaders should actively mentor and sponsor high-potential women. - Bias Training: Implementing unconscious bias training can help managers make more equitable promotion decisions. - Transparent Metrics: Tracking promotion rates and setting targets for gender diversity ensures accountability. ?? Five years ago, Mattel launched a campaign called Dream Gap, which highlights the cruel fact that girls dream freely about their future until the age of five, but afterwards, they increasingly give up on dream jobs or dream positions because they see that this is how the world works. The world does indeed work a bit like this, one of the most tangible proofs being the #GenderPayGap, which makes the situation more unfair for women around the world, both at work and at home. Among other things, WeAreOpen also fights to work together to end the gender pay gap and to ensure that pay truly measures talent. And of course, we fight for the girls as well. After all, how will someone become a leader if they give up on it at age five?
