Presenters will provide information about where the embodied carbon can come from on a large commercial construction project and how to lower that carbon footprint. Presenters will share their insights on having project level conversations about embodied carbon and global warming potential that will lead to a successful project. Presenters will also provide specification requirements for performance mix designs and EPD’s. SICK is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sensors, safety systems, machine vision, encoders and automatic identification products for industrial applications. The construction of this new campus is a multi-year, multi-phase project. Aligning with SICK’s mission to focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, SICK’s new campus also incorporates several green initiatives. These include solar infrastructure, electrical vehicle charging stations, high efficiency mechanical systems, and a below-grade rainwater filtration system. The concrete was specified to have a very low environmental impact. Since the time measurements of embodied carbon have been tracked, the SICK Office and Resource Center will utilize some of the lowest embodied carbon concrete mixes of any building project in the State of Minnesota. Exergy Cascades: Should the excess heat from Server Farms be used to heat other buildings and processes further down the exergy chain ie. with their waste heat? Of course! anyone who has not followed the amazing work done in T U delft by Andy van den Debbelsteen and the team there on this - it is not too late. Why not start with: 'Energy Potential Mapping: Visualising Energy Characteristics for the Exergetic Optimisation of the Built Environment'. They show clearly how low exergy design should be at the heart of regional planning. For architects - heat and coolth cascades can radically reduce imported energy use within building envelopes by optimising the comfort value to occupants of passive and active energy gained from sun and natural ventilation too - especially in buildings with enough thermal mass in them to shift, shave, move and store heat and coolth internally - ie. really low energy buildings. Master’s Project: Designing Net-Zero Energy-Efficient Passive Solar Homes As part of my Master’s program in Construction Management at Western New England University, I worked with Professor Curt Freedman and collaborated with my teammate Ar.Avinash Ramesh ., a Registered Architect at the Council of Architecture India, to develop this project focused on designing a near net-zero energy passive solar home in Boulder, Colorado. Integrating sustainable design principles, the project highlights optimized building envelopes, renewable energy sources like solar and wind, and advanced water conservation systems. Featuring rainwater harvesting, green roofs, and energy-efficient HVAC systems, it serves as a model for eco-friendly, self-sustaining residential housing. I'm thrilled to share that our research on?Passive Thermal Performance of Thin-Shell Concrete Dome Structures?has just been published in?Energy and Buildings! ?? In this paper, we explore the?sustainability?of concrete dome structures compared to conventional wooden-frame structures, particularly focusing on the?greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions?across the life cycle of these structures. While concrete has often been criticized for its carbon footprint, our findings show that, despite having higher embodied carbon during production,?concrete dome structures significantly reduce total GHG emissions?over their lifespan, thanks to their superior thermal performance and reduced operational energy demand. This research contributes to the ongoing conversation around?sustainable infrastructure?and provides evidence that concrete, when used thoughtfully, can be part of a greener future. Smart understanding of creating multiple layers to maximize the potential for a site’s environmental contribution.

It's a belated post, but had a nice time last week at the AIA Michigan #Archifusion conference presenting on #NetZero buildings and the role of energy modeling in sustainable building design. As owner demand for highly sustainable buildings continues to grow, architects and engineers must have a shared technical language about energy performance, and work to identify their most efficient workflows and levels of detail for energy modeling. This will only become more important over the next 10 years, as ASHRAE has committed to strengthening Standard #90.1 into a Zero Carbon Emission standard by 2031. This means that by the mid 2030s, Michigan Energy Code will require buildings designed to meet Net Zero regardless whether the owner asks for it. Significant energy savings will be required throughout the built environment to pull this off - MEP systems, Architectural envelopes, passive design, and even receptacle loads. Peter Basso Associates maintains a standing Net Zero focus group, which works to share the latest developments in sustainability and lessons learned on advanced energy projects throughout the company.
