?? [New Research] Women In Russian-Speaking Cybercrime: Mythical Creatures or Significant Members of Underground? ?? It was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with the SANS Digital Forensics and Incident Response on research. Many thanks to Sean O'Connor for his support and to Will Thomas and Margo Lychak for their contributions. ?? This research uncovers the presence and role of women in Russian-speaking cybercrime. This subject remains under-researched, raising critical questions about the nature of their involvement: Who are these women? What roles do they assume within cybercriminal enterprises? And, more importantly, how significant is their presence? ?? To address these questions, we implemented a multidisciplinary research approach. Our investigation includes first-hand accounts, such as an interview with a former female hacker, known cases of women convicted for their involvement in cybercrime, proprietary intelligence gathered during investigations, and analysis of activity across platforms used by cybercriminal networks. Additionally, we incorporated a socio-economic analysis of Russian-speaking countries - Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine - particularly as these factors influence gender dynamics in both legitimate and illicit labor markets, as well as the relationships between men and women. ?? “This is a man’s world," our Confidential Human Source (CHS) stated during the interview. In cybercrime, gender norms prevalent in former Soviet Union countries are very much present and even intensified. She shared insights that reveal an intriguing dynamic within the Russian-speaking cybercrime world, including interactions that often extend beyond online exchanges to in-person meetings, where gender biases become even more evident.” ?? Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 introduced new dimensions to gender dynamics in Russian-speaking regions, bringing women into leadership roles across both legitimate and underground sectors. As a result, women have become more visible in resistance movements, digital warfare, and various initiatives that support the war. One notable case uncovered in the research involves Yuliya Pankratova, a member of the Cyber Army of Russia, whose name was announced in July 2024 along with sanctions against the group. ???
