Our recent Webinar with #healthengine highlighted a number of critically important issues in healthcare, especially affordability. Did you know that in the last 12 months, half of the Australian community who reported needing a doctor, either delayed their GP visit or did not go due to cost. This is a statistic which is profound. It means that healthcare has become something you get if you can afford it. It demonstrates that healthcare is no longer universal. It means that a proportion of these people will present later, less well, and in some cases need urgent care. It points to a possible decline in our overall health as a nation. The APA believes we all deserve better for our investment in health. The solutions are challenging and complex, but the least we can do is get started.

I'm excited to share that our latest study, highlighted on the front pages of The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, offers key insights into the benefits of continuity of care in primary healthcare. Our analysis of 10 million consultations over a decade demonstrates that seeing the same GP not only enhances patient health but also reduces doctors' workloads and could free up millions of appointments annually. Particularly impactful for older patients and those with chronic conditions, this continuity ensures better health outcomes and more efficient healthcare delivery. Improving and better targeting continuity could result in a potential 5% reduction in consultations, echoing a step forward in optimizing healthcare resources and improving patient care. In spring 2024, we interviewed patients and their associations as well as health care providers, those responsible for patient contacts at companies, government agencies and hospitals about the value of #patientassociations. Four main conclusions from our survey ??: ?? Patients and healthcare providers think patient associations should be equal partners in healthcare. ?? Healthcare providers are less familiar with the services patient associations can provide to patients, medical practice or health policy, but they consider them very important. ?? Patients and healthcare providers are convinced that patients guided by patient associations will have faster and better health outcomes. ?? Most respondents agree that patient associations should be given the resources to play their role in a quality manner. Universal healthcare VS direct care. Let's do it. For no reason in particular I thought today would be the perfect day to hash out this politically charged topic. What are the pros and cons of each model? We have plenty of examples of universal healthcare throughout the developed world, although not on the scale the U.S. would require. We don't really have any great examples of true free market healthcare in a developed nation. Our current system is a strange cross between the two and likely performing much worse than if we were to go all-in on one approach or the other. So, let's hear it. If tomorrow the U.S. healthcare system could transform to provide universal coverage or be fully free market - which option would you, ahem, vote for?
