During bridge WIM measurements, we often observe a significant effect that uneven or damaged bridge joints have on the dynamics of the vehicles. In the article "Bridge Expansion Joint in Road Transition Curve: Effects Assessment on Heavy Vehicles," the researchers looked at the interraction between bridge joints, pavement, and heavy vehicles. Damaged expension joints or the surrounding surface have an effect on the suspension system of the vehicles, the structure of the bridge, and, via increased traffic loads due to induced dynamics, the quality of the pavement.?The field tests done by the authors of the article also showed that during specific circumstances, a complete lifting of the rear axle of an HGV is possible, which can have a catastrophic effect on road safety. Aurora’s adaptive control architecture is being tested on 1.5-meter-long, uncrewed surface vessels in Boston’s Charles River. https://lnkd.in/e9BubA3i Adaptive control enables vehicles to adapt their control laws in real time and maintain safe operation in unpredicted conditions. The algorithms continuously improve performance and safety, and the vessel acts more reliably, which builds trust with human operators and improves the performance of the human-machine team. As part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) LINC program, the Aurora and MIT team will perform at four demonstration events, one approximately every six months, beginning later this year. “Together, we are advancing technology that can increase efficiency and safety of operations for land, air, and sea vehicles,” said Aurora’s CTO Graham Drozeski.
