During my time at @Life Without Barriers, I’ve learned that fostering can come in many forms. Providing care doesn’t have to be full-time; it can be providing a safe space for a young person for a couple of nights or one weekend each month. When it comes to fostering, no two children or families are the same; that’s why Life Without Barriers doesn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. ?? #Funding alert! If you support #Kinship Families, we would love to hear from you. 1. We're looking to understand current practice and support for #Kinship Families across England 2. We want to fund delivery of a programme, which our Practice Guide suggests is really promising: a Kinship Navigator Programme and/or therapeutic support for Kinship Carers or children in kinship care 3. We want to fund programmes that make a real difference to children (we'll fund programmes that target carers (to change outcomes for children), or children directly. 4. There are important #Race disparities in kinship care. Any programme we fund needs to demonstrate its commitment to addressing this problem, so we can make sure all kinship families get the support they need. 5. Last night at Swope Middle School, our CEO, Kim Young, presented one of many initiatives aimed at combatting the growing chronic absenteeism crisis in our Washoe County schools. The Children's Cabinet, along with several other dedicated partners, is committed to addressing this challenge with cooperative solutions to ensure our children receive the best education our district has to offer. Initiative #1 - Dedicate at least one Site Coordinator or Prevention Specialist at every school. Initiative #2 - Expand Family Resource Centers AND provide access to basic needs for families. Initiative #3 - Develop Innovative approaches to transportation. Initiative #4 - Expand before and after school child care. Initiative #5 - Engage families through positive relationships and mutual trust. Build family capacity with attendance. Build awareness of the availability of community resources to support families. Initiative #6 - Launch a community awareness campaign on rising absenteeism and the long-term impacts on the community. Initiative #7 - Ensure that every student has a teacher. ?? It's Kinship Caregiver Month, a time to honor those stepping in to care for children when they need it most! This year, the Annie E. Casey Foundation highlighted that over 50% of children in Arizona’s foster care system are in kinship placements, making AZ a top state for kinship care. Let's give our thanks to these caregivers and continue to push for policies that support their success. Key actions include reducing barriers to licensing, providing equitable financial support, and recognizing the needs of unlicensed caregivers.
