"Bobby, right?" the Starbucks barista asked as she arrived to the table where I was seated. I nodded. "Here," she then said as she handed me my latté. "I didn't want you to have to walk back over to pick this up," obviously having noted that I had picked up my cup of iced water at the barista counter a minute earlier (when the latté was not yet ready). And with that, the Starbucks barista smiled, headed back to tend to the growing line of people, and left me feeling... Grateful. Impressed. And making a mental note. Because one Starbucks barista 1) said my name and 2) broke the Starbucks script (it wasn't me getting the drink, but her bringing it my way) I'm now making a mental note that this is a good Starbucks, and I really should revisit it. -- Great leadership (read: "influence") involves many things, but sometimes a moment in time helps clarify some of the essentials in a wonderfully memorable way: 1. Lead with a person's name. 2. Break the script in a way that accents service - or perhaps even surprises with a new level of service.
