From September 23rd to the 29th, Operation Lifesaver? is promoting railroad safety with their See Tracks? Think Train? Week. Their initiative is to prevent incidents with both railroad crossing and trespass. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, a total of 2,192 highway-rail grade crossing collisions occurred in 2023; New Jersey is 35 of those collisions. Week (formerly Rail Safety Week) is a concentrated week of rail safety education focusing attention on the importance of making safe choices when driving or walking near railroad tracks and trains. First held in the U.S. in 2017, this collaborative effort among Operation Lifesaver Inc., State Operation Lifesaver Programs, and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada and Mexico aims to reduce railroad related injuries and fatalities. This week focuses on preventing railroad crossing and trespass incidents across North America and concentrating public attention on the need for rail safety education. The members of #ILRail put significant dollars, resources, and planning into ensuring our nation's railroads are tremendously safe. It is worth reminding both the public and policy makers that our industry is among the safest places to work, we are the safest way to move goods overland, and accident rates have dropped dramatically in the last quarter century. "The safest way to move goods over land." That is rarely reflected in discussions about our nation's railroads, but facts back up that reality: "Data from the Federal Railroad Administration highlight significant safety improvements across the rail industry. The overall train accident rate in 2023 decreased 27% from 2000; the employee injury rate fell 50%; and grade crossing collision rate dropped 25%. Notably, railroads today boast lower employee injury rates than most over major industries, including trucking, airlines, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and even grocery stores."
