Downsizing can be a challenge for anyone, but it’s often even more difficult for seniors. Recently, Amston Home Transition Solutions had the privilege of speaking with Leslie Goyen from Wethersfield Community Television about the importance of downsizing. Our team members, Andrew Jambor and Steve Anderson, shared insight into how decluttering and organizing can create a cleaner, more stress-free living environment. They also discussed the downsizing process, emphasizing the value of repurposing and donating items, as well as the services we offer and how you can get in touch with us.?

As the frost begins to settle and the nights grow longer, we embrace the spirit of giving. St John's Care is reaching out for your support during our Winter Appeal when the plight of the vulnerable is most acute. St John's Care provides urgent relief across the ACT region. Your generosity is the lifeline for many, with our mission sustained by donations from the community, church groups, benevolent businesses, and kind-hearted individuals like you. Our team is made up of volunteers and professionals, adapting flexibly to the diverse needs of those who come to our door. Yet, the number of crises our community is experiencing is complex. With growing concern, we witness the increasing housing crisis and the issues of those trapped in homelessness. Those in dire need, including individuals grappling with severe health issues, disabilities, survivors of domestic violence, and vulnerable children, confront an average waiting period of 256 days for priority housing – a daunting span in the best of times, let alone in the harshness of winter. This for what is a fundamental human necessity. Pamela a mother of two, is "lucky" enough to have an onsite van in a caravan park. However, while the onsite fees keep rising, her pension does not. She and her young children are on the government waitlist for housing. No wonder she is struggling, paying 75% of her pension in rent. The economic landscape only heightens this struggle as rising interest rates pour into the rental market, squeezing the financial stability of private renters. The upsurge in requests for necessities like food and clothing is a telling sign of the times. Alarmingly, we now even see homeowners seeking help, trapped by the interest hikes that once seemed a distant concern. SJC is adapting as best we can to provide respite—offering sleeping bags, tents, and backpack beds for those without shelter and ensuring that even those relegated to their cars or couches receive the warmth of a doona. A recent testament to our efforts is the heart-wrenching story of a father and his two children, who, after six harrowing months of sleeping in their car, have finally found a sanctuary to call home. Their journey is a stark reminder of the lasting scars such hardship can inflict, particularly on innocent young lives. Your gift to our Winter Appeal can kindle hope and offer the promise of shelter and security. Banding together we make a difference. https://lnkd.in/gsZTyCAH #canberra #charity #donatenow #thankyou Image: Snow on the mountains behind Parliament House in Canberra

MIE Sustaining Member, The Kresge Foundation, was recently highlighted for supporting the investment of starter homes for low income families. Starter homes, traditionally affordable entry-level houses for first-time buyers, are becoming increasingly scarce due to rising construction costs, land prices, and regulatory challenges. Philanthropic organizations can play a pivotal role in addressing this shortage by funding innovative housing solutions, advocating for policy reforms, and supporting community land trusts to ensure long-term affordability. By investing in these strategies, philanthropy can help preserve the availability of starter homes for low-income families, promoting economic stability and community development. #Philanthropy #SocialImpact #ImpactInvesting

Broke and Isolated: The Reality of Summer Holidays When I consider what families supported by First Days Children's Charity truly need from us, I'm struck by the isolating reality of having no money. Daisy-May Cooper's candid memoir, "Don't laugh it'll only encourage her," vividly illustrates this. She describes how having no money meant she lost friendships due to the prohibitive cost of socialising: “You sure you don't want an Americano?' No, I don't want an Americano. I want tap water, because tap water is free. And if you buy me an Americano, I won't be able to buy you one back. Because I have no money. I don't even carry a purse any more because the only thing in it is a Tesco Clubcard. We'll finish our drinks, and I'll be in the middle of telling you a funny anecdote, but inside I'll be screaming because I can see you're staring at your empty cup and I know you are waiting for my stupid story to end so I can buy you another coffee. And I'll feel ashamed, because all I want to do is buy you one, of course I do, but I can't, and you think it's because I'm not picking up your social cues.” Cooper poignantly concludes, "That's why I stopped seeing my friends. Correction: that's why they stopped seeing me. You wouldn't think it, but having friends costs money." This isolation is particularly acute for families during the summer holidays. In Wokingham, Berkshire, where over 4,500 children live below the poverty line, daily life becomes a financial obstacle course. With one in eight children growing up in households without adequate funds, and the remaining 7/8 being considered ‘well off’ the pressure to spend is omnipresent. Local parks, once havens of free enjoyment, are now commercialised, with ice cream vans charging £3.50 for a 99. This stark contrast between those who can afford to do something as simple as go to the park and those who cannot creates a profound sense of exclusion for families. And don’t get me started on the energy it takes to explain to everyone who asks that no, you’re not going on holiday this year. One Mum shared her heartbreaking strategy: extending a five-minute school run to twenty minutes to avoid shops and the reality of always having to disappoint her children when they ask to go in, like the other kids to get sweets or an ice cream. The prospect of declining invitations to bowling, crazy golf, or even a simple park visit and coffee is a constant source of stress, impacting both parents and children. At First Days, we create opportunities for families to participate in everyday and special events, regardless of financial constraints. From providing tickets to sports matches and theatre shows to offering free refreshments at our weekly coffee club and tokens for the rides at the local fair, we aim to create a sense of belonging and community so that just because you can’t afford something as taken for granted as a latte, it doesn’t mean you’re excluded in our community.

Seniors in Ottawa, looking to downsize your home without overwhelming stress? Let's break it down together. ??? Many seniors face the challenge of moving to a smaller space. It's a big decision, but it doesn't have to be hard. Here's how you can make it a smooth journey: 1?? Start Small: Begin with a room or two. Decide what you need and what can go. It’s about taking baby steps. 2?? Smart Organizing: Use boxes to sort things out - one for keeping, one for donating, and one for discarding. 3?? Digitize Memories: Pictures and old letters can be scanned. It saves space and keeps those memories safe. 4?? Local Help: Look for local services in Ottawa that specialize in downsizing. Professionals can simplify the process and handle the heavy lifting. 5?? Say Goodbye with Love: This is more than just packing. It’s about cherishing memories while creating new ones in a new home. Remember, it's about making life easier and more joyful. Downsizing doesn’t mean letting go of the past; it means creating a simpler future. Have you been through this process, or are you considering it? Let’s share tips and support each other. ??

Happy 2025. I think it will be a big and exciting year, but I’d like to share a few professional challenges, in the hope they resonate with others and we can share ideas on here. Here goes… 1. SYSTEM CHANGE WHEN THERE IS NO MONEY For the ecosystem of housing and homelessness we seek to change, and for us internally at Crisis, this is a big one. How do we shift to lasting, evidence-based solutions, away from a reliance on temporary solutions, without crashing current ways of working that people desperately rely on. And how to do it without spare cash to dual run services as they transition? This is a policy/advocacy question, one of best practice in helping councils and others, but also one for us as a service provider as we seek to increase our own impact. Creating the financial space for system change, and even the headspace for it, is presumably a shared challenge for many sectors? 2. HOUSING HOUSING HOUSING This is the year we start our journey of directly providing homes (not accommodation) to people facing homelessness. It has long been said that you can’t realise the full potential of the Housing First agenda without the housing, and so we’ve decided to take on that challenge. We will need to raise money from new sources and partners, and to learn new skills as an organisation. I’d love to hear from others who have shared interests and lessons, taking bravery new steps in housing, but also in other examples of an organisation broadening its remit. 3. GOOD TO GREAT I have a cracking team and it has been a pleasure to recruit and work with each of them. All are superb individuals but we are not yet flying as a team. I’d like us to be fully sharing challenges and responsibilities, and crucially to be able to instill that in every team across a large and complex charity. I’m still learning my role and would love to hear how others have taken senior (or any) teams from good to great. If any of this resonates, let me know, and why! Oh, and lastly, the this amazing artwork is from a Crisis member, and is a perfect interpretation of our strategy.

?????? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ???? ???????????? Through HONK's mission, we're inherently addressing this issue. ?????? ?????? ????????????: In 2023 the Northern Kentucky Area Development District (NKADD) conducted a study that revealed we need over 6,000 additional housing units within 5 years to keep up with the workforce growth in NKY. HONK, a dedicated nonprofit organization is making a difference in resolving the NKY housing crisis-one home at a time. The speed at which we can build and rehab homes is greatly enhanced by community support, donations, and volunteer efforts. ?????? ?????????? ????????????/??????????????????: In Northern Kentucky, high construction costs are deterring single and double residential builders from investing in smaller projects, pushing them towards larger developments for better returns. HONK is committed to constructing smaller, affordable homes for families, with the goal of eventual homeownership. ????????????????, ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????????????????? ???? ?????? ?? ????????. ???????????? ???????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ?????? ???????????? ????????????????????????!
