Are some of your event features at a detriment to your others? Sure, we all want to add more content and more value to events.? However, is that coming at a cost? We recently managed a feature for a client and when we called through the people who didn’t attend post event, (which I highly recommend you do) Most of them told us they were tied up at another feature or presentation at the same time. Some even said there were too many other things on offer! It pays to be mindful when scheduling speakers and presentations and to really think about the cross section of the audience and who will likely attend which session. A common misconception is that you have a great event and you’re done, success in the books. Nope. That’s when the work begins. There’s a psychological principle that you can enhance people's perception of an event by shifting the end and making it later. The best organizers do that by highlighting the experiences in follow up communications using pictures, videos, experiences, and takeaways. I’ve even seen them curate opportunities to form groups offline with the people they met at the show. With ongoing mini-events (like meetups) throughout the year. All these things help to extend the narrative in our minds about how amazing the event actually was - even months after it’s over. Event organizers want attendees to be fully present and engaged during every second of an event. However, attendees want to be able to duck in and out of sessions, take calls and keep up with work. Am I wrong? Are these two compatible? Perhaps the bigger question is whether we can design engaging event experiences that allow attendees can pick and choose what they actively participate in.
