"Many of these issues that have impacted us have been driven by factors out of our control. The trade tensions with China have led to this oversupply scenario that we currently have. What we're looking for is not a baked in, systemic assistance measure from the Government. What we are looking for is a course correction". Lee McLean, CEO Australian Grape & Wine. Among the seismic changes introduced by the French Revolution was the arrival of the Napoleonic Code - a set of laws that continues to impact property, including vineyards, across the country today. Specifically, it ensured equal inheritance among descendants, regardless of birth order or sex, overturning the previous ability to pass property to a single heir. The 1804 Civil Code packed a double whammy. Besides forcing equal division of inherited property, it allowed taxing the forced heirship at a high rate, which has varied over the decades. Sometimes, these laws have given us great estates. The origins of both Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse, for example, lie with Joseph de Pichon Longueville who built his estate into one of the most impressive properties in Bordeaux – and who in 1850 split it into two to ensure his children received their inheritance. His son Raoul was given both his share and that of his deceased brother in the form of 20ha of vines that became Pichon Baron. His three sisters Sophie, Gabrielle and Virginie received 30ha that became Pichon Comtesse. Keeping estates in families, however, became increasingly challenging, resulting in numerous estate buyouts by corporations, foreign and domestic, sometimes purchased by a single wealthy individual and sometimes by insurance companies or banks. This week, on #newcontentthursday, Charlie Leary (李嘉立) PhD takes us through the impact of this complicated system both on the big and small winemakers of Bordeaux. One winemaker tells him: “It’s crippling for estates that have difficulty selling their wines, because they can’t afford to set aside money to pay for future inheritance taxes.” Join us on Thursday to find out more. #frenchrevolution #napoleoniccode #winehistory #insidebordeaux #pichoncomtesse #pichonbaron #wineinheritance #subscribercontent #chateau #wineknowledge #charlieleary

Butter has been around for over 10,000 years, and in those centuries it has been used in countless recipes, 3 interesting myth about butter ?? 1-The Butter Tax Butter was once so ingrained in Scandinavian culture, that the 11th-century Norwegian king Svein Knutsson demanded each of his subjects provide him a bucket of butter as tax annually.?If you were King Svein, what would you make with this volume of butter? ?? 2-?The Great Race For A French Butter Substitute In the mid-19th century, Emperor Napoleon III offered a prize to anyone that could develop a cheap butter alternative for French workers and his armies in the Franco-Prussian war. Napoleon’s challenge led to French chemist Hippolyte Mege-Mouries patenting margarine in 1869. 3-?Building With Butter Back in the 15th century, the Catholic church banned its followers from eating butter during the 40 days of Lent. However, Catholics could paid a fee to the church if they wanted to free themselves from the butter-ban entirely. So many French Catholics opted to give money rather than forgo butter that the revenue generated from butter fees became a substantial funding source for France’s Rouen Cathedral. Today, the Rouen Cathedral is colloquially known as the Butter Tower. ?? you think which one is more strange???? #unsaltedbutter #confectionery #bakery #fmcgindustry #Butter #retail #cakeshop #foodandbeverage #fastfood #retail #supermarket #dairy #cream #hypermarket #food #restaurant #catering #Jordan #Yemen #Uae #saudiarabia #Qatar #Bahrain #Kuwait #Lebanon #Armenia #Georgia #Azerbaijan #oman #Syria #Turkmenistan #Uzbekistan #Kazakhstan #Kyrgyzstan #Tajikistan

Happy Saffron Friday! This week, we dive into a fascinating chapter from history where fashion, politics, and our beloved saffron intersect in an unexpected narrative. ???? Saffron and Social Order in 12th Century Ireland ???? As the English invaded Ireland in the twelfth century, not only were they met with resistance but also with a culture rich in traditions, one of which involved the vibrant use of saffron. The English saw Irish dress, particularly saffron-dyed clothing, as a symbol of rebellion that needed to be suppressed. Saffron Under Scrutiny ???? Saffron-dyed clothes were targeted by sumptuary legislation, as Protestant colonists associated the color with both extravagance and poor hygiene. More than just a means to a vibrant garment, saffron was valued for its ability to deodorize, disinfect, and even delouse clothing—qualities enhanced, purportedly, when urine was mixed into the dye. Cultural Misunderstandings ???? Famed poet and administrator Edmund Spenser noted that the Irish, influenced by the practices of the Catholic Old Spaniards, adopted saffron dying due to its supposed benefits. However, he also criticized the Irish habits around linen and hygiene, contributing to enduring stereotypes. Despite these beliefs, there is no historical evidence to support the claim that the Irish were uniquely unclean or that saffron served as an effective insecticide. Why This Matters ?? This slice of saffron's history illuminates how deeply intertwined it is with cultural identities and conflicts. The narrative around saffron-dyed clothing in Ireland during the English invasion reveals how a simple spice can hold significant socio-political weight. Join us next week for another intriguing Saffron Friday Fact. Let's continue to unravel the rich and colorful stories behind the world's most prized spice. #Saffron #agriculture #farming #gardening #Irish #ireland
