It's #AgeismAwarenessDay, and my future month this month is all about Ageism at both ends. I know so many people, particularly women, who are shut out of the job market in their 50s. This means they struggle to find affordable healthcare and face diminished savings for retirement despite also having higher caregiving obligations for both children and parents. On the other end of the spectrum, I know so many young people who are aging out of their parents' healthcare but are unable to find full-time work with benefits. I also know many young people with good degrees and internship experience who can't find 'entry-level' work because 'entry-level' is defined as 3-5 years of experience. We are doing a lot of disservice to a lot of people in our society, and these two ends of our workforce should band together.

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a day that symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality. This day marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a reminder of the strength and determination of those who fought for their freedom. Juneteenth is not only a celebration of the past but also a call to action for the present and future. It highlights the importance of social justice, equity, and the continuous fight against systemic oppression. This day encourages us to reflect on the progress made and the work still needed to achieve true equality. As we honor this significant day, let’s commit to fostering inclusive environments, supporting mental health initiatives, and advocating for justice in all its forms. We believe that a cultural shift toward not only valuing but prioritizing integration is long overdue. School segregation is as much a story of failed public policy as it is of White &/or privileged families thwarting it, which is why we call on White &/or privileged families to consider how the choices we make for our kids affects all kids in our communities. By unknowingly or knowingly separating our children through our choices, privileged families perpetuate social inequity and continue a racist historical legacy. We believe this perpetuation is wrong and that we all must take action to change it. Our paper on how #place shapes the aspirations of #hope. "Where some people experience precarity due to their disability, race, gender, sexuality, and social class, others enjoy enhanced agency due to their privilege. In our analysis, this loss of agency does not mean the underprivileged are hopeless; instead, it suggests that hope can incorporate negative affect and cognition. In our view, spatial hope acknowledges the power of hope in discouraging situations, and it points to practical measures through which hope can be cultivated by marginalized communities" #SpatialHope

The effects of colonialism on disabled people are multifaceted, impacting not only physical bodies but also cultural perceptions, social structures, and access to resources. These intertwined systems of oppression have shaped the lived experiences of many disabled individuals, often limiting opportunities and perpetuating inequality. As we reflect on these issues, we must strive to dismantle these oppressive structures and work towards a society where everyone, regardless of differing levels of ability, has equal access to opportunities and resources. The taboo around disability within previously colonised communities is a legacy left behind by the Western imperialists. Ableism is hidden and apparent in mentality that rejects seeking supports or changes to environment. The value of a person is seen through the lens of imperialism as opposed to traditional community based supports. We have to work with our Black and Brown communities to call out and educate about ableism. This could look like encouraging people to use supports, not apologising for the ear buds or wearing the tinted glasses that you need.
