Most causes of deaths in children could be prevented with effective treatment and interventions that are feasible for implementation. However, appropriate medicines to save and improve the lives of infants and children often do not exist, are unavailable, or are not quality assured. I have worked with colleagues from the Global Accelerator for Pediatric Formulations Network (GAP-f) on this advocacy brief. This is intended to mobilize efforts to advocate for quicker and sustained access to better medicines for children. This issue should be on the agenda of world leaders and forums such as the World Health Summit UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health among other platforms. https://lnkd.in/eg88HK48

One of the challenges of explaining the value of the public health sector is that when it is most successful, the results are often unseen because something bad doesn't happen. The study below is an excellent example of an effort to quantify the impact of prevention. The COVID prevention efforts saved both lives and money - a lot of both. "Conclusions: The We Can Do This COVID-19 public education campaign saved more than 50,000 lives and prevented hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and millions of COVID-19 cases, representing hundreds of billions of dollars in benefits in less than one year. Findings suggest that public education campaigns are a cost-effective approach to reducing COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Am J Prev Med 2024;000(000):1?7." Using implementation science to address quadruple burden of disease in SA The Division of Public Health at the University of the Free together with the Central University for Technology, held a successful workshop (first phase) for their project: Capacity building for the use of implementation science in various typologies in low- and middle-income countries for the prevention and/or management of the quadruple burden of disease. According to the National Institute for Health as well as the World Health Organization, implementation science supports innovative approaches to identifying, understanding, and overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up and sustainability of evidence-based interventions, tools, policies, and guidelines. Implementation research therefore pertains to gathering and analysing implementation evidence of effectiveness that determines if the intervention works in real-world circumstances.
