Back in July I received a very special invitation to send my application to be considered as a potential member of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, a think tank providing research, training and information to the legal profession concerned with the development of international business law. It was not until October that I was notified about my “Acceptance” to join the prestigious list of members as the second but first woman member from Bolivia. Feeling honored and excited about participating in future events and activities! ? Founded in 1979, Key objectives of the Institute are to: (i) Encourage the study of legal matters concerning international business; ii) Foster a wider knowledge of the law and practices of international business; iii) Strengthen the links between the practitioners of international business, scholars and researchers; iv) Offer lawyers, business representatives and students of law a means to deepen their knowledge of the legal techniques of international trade, and enable them to apply them in practice. A special thanks to Mélanie Van Leeuwen, Chair of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, for suggesting my name as a potential member. ? #ICCInstituteofWorldBusinessLaw #BusinessLaw #InternationalBusiness #InternationalTrade

Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor.studio: 2024: The year African expertise reshaped international arbitration's narrative, one thoughtful intervention at a time. When global legal frameworks meet local understanding, transformation happens. This year demonstrated that principle through every challenge navigated, every conversation facilitated, every perspective shared. My journey through the Africa Arbitration Academy's flagship program was more than professional training—it was a profound exploration of how African legal professionals can drive global dispute resolution. From London's premier law firms to intensive workshops, each session reinforced a critical insight: our continent's legal talent isn't just participating in international arbitration; we're reshaping its future. Highlights that captured this evolution: 1. NBA Kano Branch Law Week Panel Session: ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution as a Pathway to Economic Growth in Nigeria in View of the AfCFTA: Are Nigerian Lawyers Ready to Embrace the Potential Opportunities Abound?.’ 2. Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice Annual Conference Panel Session: "The impact of Judicial Attitudes on Arbitration in Nigeria. 3. Africa Arbitration Academy Diploma Completion: ‘Mastering international arbitration's nuanced landscape while centering African perspectives’. 4. Nigerian Bar Association HQ Conference Breakout Session: ‘Cultivating trust, efficiency, and reliability in dispute resolution mechanisms’. 5. The World Bank Group's Women, Business and the Law Discussion: ‘Bridging legal expertise with tangible economic empowerment strategies’. 6. Global Shapers Community - Kano Hub Panel Session:?'Building Partnerships for a Sustainable Future' My appointment as Council Member at the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) Africa Users' Councils wasn't just a professional milestone—it was a platform to amplify African voices in international arbitration. Each conversation, each policy discussion becomes an opportunity to demonstrate our continent's legal sophistication. The World Bank team's engagement on women's economic rights and the Global Shapers Community discuss epitomized this year's deeper mission: legal practice isn't just about resolving disputes, but about creating pathways for systemic transformation and sustainable development. Looking ahead to 2025, my focus remains clear: expanding African representation in international arbitration while developing legal frameworks that don't just resolve conflicts, but actively promote economic and social development. To my mentors, colleagues, and the remarkable teams at Africa Arbitration Academy, Dikko & Mahmoud, and our global partners—your collective vision makes this work meaningful. #LinkedInRewind #Coauthor #2024wrapped -- Get your 2024 LinkedIn Rewind! Exactly a week ago, I had the opportunity of joining like minded students as speakers on the inaugural students edition webinar organized by the African Arbitration Association Young Members Group. Being my first speaking engagement in the arbitration space and also being the representative for Ghana, it was exhilarating. However, under the tutelage and guidance of Lauraine Darkwah, MCIArb, I was able to prepare adequately. The webinar dubbed : First Steps in Arbitration: Opportunities for Young Arbitration Practice Practitioners moderated by Vincent Mahugu and Lauraine Darkwah, MCIArb, proved to be very insightful. Here are a few takeaways from the webinar: 1. A strong foundation in Arbitration will help you grasp the dynamics of international arbitration. 2. Arbitration provides a good avenue for networking. 3. Develop your oral and writing skills. 4. Be intentional about learning. 5. Mentorship is key to your growth in the Arbitration space. I am grateful to the African Arbitration Association Young Members Group for the opportunity and I certainly look forward to more collaborations soon. I'm also grateful to my mentor Lauraine Darkwah, MCIArb for nominating me for this webinar. I'd also like to thank my boss florence hagan for assisting me in my preparation for this event. If you'd love to have the recording of the webinar , kindly indicate your interest in the comments. #Arbitration #speaker #youngarbitrators #webinar #law Hope Chabwe Maurine Sinami

CS Mercy W.'s remarks highlight several key points regarding arbitration in Africa and its potential for growth and influence during the CIArb Kenya @40 international ADR conference. 1. Progressiveness of Africa: Wanjau emphasizes that Africa is making strides in various aspects, including arbitration. This implies that the continent is advancing economically, legally, and institutionally. 2. Proliferation of Arbitral Institutions: She questions whether having many arbitral institutions in Africa might be seen as redundant or excessively fragmented. This suggests a need for coordination and synergy among these institutions to enhance their effectiveness and international recognition. 3. Learning from Older and More Mature Centres: Wanjau suggests that African arbitral institutions can benefit from the experiences of older and more established arbitration centers around the world. This includes adopting best practices, improving institutional frameworks, and enhancing credibility. 4. Africa's Moment of Pivot: This phrase implies a critical juncture or turning point for Africa in the field of arbitration. It suggests an opportunity for significant growth and development in establishing Africa as a prominent hub for arbitration, particularly in disputes related to mineral resources. 5. Unity and Collaboration: Wanjau advocates for African countries to work together. Collaboration can help in consolidating efforts, pooling resources, and presenting a unified front to the international community. This unity can bolster Africa's position in the global arbitration landscape. 6. Specialization in Mineral Resource Disputes: Given Africa's abundant natural resources, Wanjau highlights the importance of specializing in arbitration for disputes involving mineral resources. This specialization can attract investment, expertise, and international cases to African arbitral institutions. In summary, Wanjau's remarks underscore Africa's progress in arbitration, the need for consolidation and learning from established centers, and the strategic importance of positioning African arbitral institutions as leading players in resolving disputes, especially those concerning valuable natural resources like minerals. This vision aligns with promoting Africa's economic development, legal infrastructure, and international standing in arbitration. Kananu Mutea Hon.
