?? Did you know #OurCounty has increased its annual budget for reforestation efforts by over 70% compared to 2021? ?? This has helped us maximize opportunities and double the number of trees planted at parks and green areas, as well as in roadways, at county buildings and in environmentally endangered areas. ?? The county is close to finalizing a contract with the USDA to implement a $10 million grant to plant trees primarily on streets in targeted areas over the next five years. ?? ?? ?? Programs like Adopt-a-Tree and Million Trees Miami are resulting in an additional 10,000 trees provided to residents to plant each year through free giveaways. ?? Last month, Miami-Dade County Office of Resilience was invited to a tree planting event with Coca-Cola Beverages Florida where 80 trees were planted at North Pointe Community Center. ?? ? To wrap up #EarthMonth, this weekend I graduated from Forest ReLeaf of Missouri's Tree Stewardship program, which included 12 hours of classroom instruction and 15 hours of volunteer work. Over the past month, I participated in some local volunteer activities, including: ?? Planting trees along the Great Rivers Greenway ?? Potting tree seedlings at the Forest ReLeaf nursery ?? Pulling tulips at the Missouri Botanical Garden ?? Picking up trash and removing invasive species with Open Space STL ?? Mulching and pruning park trees with STL Neighborhood Foresters The most important thing I learned during this program ... There are some amazing organizations in St. Louis making our city a greener, healthier and more beautiful place to live. If you're like me and at times feel overwhelmed by the immense amount of work needed to safeguard our environment, go out and give a few hours of your time at one of these (or similar) organizations. You'll feel better knowing that you made a lasting and positive impact on your community. That, and say no to mulch volcanoes ?? (Seriously though, they're awful for trees.) The City of Waco will receive $3.2 million in funding from the EPA to improve food security, sustainability, and climate resilience in our community. This is part of the larger $17.9 million Community Change Grant awarded to local organizations, spearheaded by Mission Waco. Over the next three years, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District will use the funding for county-wide food security and sustainability initiatives, including community gardens, tree planting, and composting. The Health District will also take on the role of supporting the administrative needs of the SCRAP Collective (Sustainable Community and Regenerative Agricultural Project). The Housing & Community Development Department will use the funds to address lead hazards in low-income homes through the Home Rehabilitation Program. Learn more at waco-texas.com/EPAGrant

This message is for my grassroots community builders. It’s hard to believe that we are preparing for the beginning of the holiday season. I encourage you to plant seeds everyday in your community. There are several unique metaphorical seasons when building community. 1) Planting the seeds - Each day in your community, you are planting seeds for opportunities. When you plant a seed in soil, there may not be any visible agrowth for several weeks, but eventually you see a nice breakthrough from the soil. The key is to keep planting multiple seeds. 2) Nuturing the blooms - As your seeds begin to blossom, you can’t neglect them. It’s critical to continue to water the plant so that the plant can have the most beneficial environment for growth. When building community, you must nurture your people and not give up at the first sign of adversity. 3) Celebrating the harvest - You have been watering this plant, putting it in the sun, and nuturing it for a long time. Out of no where after months of hard work, the plant begins to grow in all directions. You are amazed that your hard work has paid off. Enjoy this season, as it is easy to believe that this season will last forever. 4) Expressing gratitude for the pruning and drought season - You are enjoying all the success until it’s time to prune the plant so that it can grow bigger and expand its territory. This is one of the most difficult seasons for community builders and organizers as it includes pruning people. You must be comfortable knowing that everyone will not be able to go with you to the next level. Recognize where you are in the community building cycle and appreciate each phase. On, Earth Day, theoretically the biggest holiday in terms of how "big" it is, I like to keep it small. I paddleboard a lot. It's one of the reasons I moved to Florida. In Pennsylvania, I generally paddled on the Susquehanna River, roughly 380 miles down from its beginning. 380 miles that have been mostly civilized for hundreds of years. It's difficult to go more than 100 yards or so without finding trash. There's actually an Instagram account from a guy who's been picking trash out of the water for the past several years. He's collected - literally - thousands of items. When possible, I'd pick up pieces, myself, but with so much trash and so much current, I found it impossible to make a dent. Before too long, some of what I collected would inevitably get blown off the board, despite my best efforts. In Florida, I live on a 28 mile river. It's a much smaller one in a state that's really only had measurable population for 100 years or so. On a two hour paddle, I might come across 4-6 pieces of trash and I try to pick every one of them up, from beer cans to lawn chairs. Why? Because when I leave the river will once again appear to be free of trash. At least for the day. My hope is that in doing so, my river in Florida never becomes too overwhelming to keep clean. That people will always pick up trash there because it appears wrong to not do so. So I choose a river that's "small." Likewise, I choose a tactic that's "small." There are wonderful nonprofits like the Suncoast Waterkeeper that are working to the protect my river and others in the courtroom. Organizations like the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast are doing their best to save these waters for future generations and I'm grateful for them and others like them. But someone needs to pick up the trash, and I'm happy to do it. #earthday #florida

Fed up with an overgrown, unusable space on their school site, Blackrod Primary School are using the Green Spaces Fund to turn it into a community garden for children, families, and community members ?? They'll be growing food, teaching about wildlife and healthy food production, and introducing a composting system to enhance soil health and reduce waste. The school hope that their Green Spaces Fund project will foster a closer-knit, healthier community whilst providing accessible green space in Bolton. Lancashire Wildlife Trust

Ancient wisdom teaches us that two forms of successive shock are necessary for transformation to occur. For that shock to be processed well and regeneratively, a community has to come together in awareness. The shocks are coming thick and fast now as many systems - ecological, economic and cultural - are at fracturing point. Communities come together in the moment of shock. The challenge to work on is the kind of new social infrastructure that holds them together after the challenge of the shock has worn off and moves them into the birthing of new systems. I hope that the resilience shown in LA can translate in the aftermath into change which can support the place to develop new practices to be at a heightened state of place-readyness for change. For now its triage but the community spirit at the heart of many affected communities is very hopeful. Even if much of these extreme patterns are outside of citizens immediate control, we can look at what local patterns ARE interconnected and change them.
