Finsen Yu and his family are transforming lives through their community garden in Montgomery, Alabama. Their foundation, named Help a Brother Out, provides residents access to free, fresh foods and a place to learn about self-sufficiency and self-growth. Aside from getting produce, people can also take classes in gardening, meditation and financial literacy. “We try to help the community help itself by instilling values and developing future leaders,” Finsen said. Finsen and his family recently received support from the Red Cross through its Community Adaptation Program to help the foundation expand its efforts and be more resilient against the climate crisis. With the provided funding, they purchased a new greenhouse, storage shed, four-wheeler, and other equipment to broaden the garden’s reach. Through this partnership, the Yu family's foundation can help more families access nutritious food and continue serving the community in the face of disasters. “The community knows that we’re here and that the Red Cross is behind us,” Finsen said. “Knowing that, they come to us because they know the Red Cross can help.”

I encourage everyone to do this. My beloved city of Henderson/Las Vegas has established things like this where people of all walks of life not only get a chance to help develop a community garden but it also provides a sense of togetherness. The ability to network amongst each other and teach each other simple tricks of the trade while creating a community garden such as how to irrigate properly without wasting water or how to create a greenhouse. Another thing is you learn with others what plants are good for your local environment. As an example, victory gardens were created during WW 1. Victory gardens were established primarily help the war effort as rations were very common. Victory gardens not only help feed people during the war but they help to balance the ecosystem and established community involvement. Here in my beloved cities and my homeland the Philippines, you see it, you believe in it! It makes perfect sense!

Great story. American Red Cross has and will continue to support community leaders, foundations and sponsors who cherish the same or similar values as American Red Cross. As part of the American Red Cross I had experience it myself. One of the most recent events I attended with one my leaders Rachel Flanigan. Her and I and other volunteers participated with another organization to fill each vehicle to less fortunate with food at a local high school parking lot. Her determination and warm heart captivated us and motivated us to do more good to our community. It is always an honor to take part on any event she participate in. See I believe in" building/rebuilding bridges" but you cannot do it alone unless with the support of the community. Ms Flanigan who I refer to very much so has embodied that and so much more. We need more of like her to be true leaders of the community. For those who you who don't know much about American Red Cross, we cherish the community in which we live in, we are part of the community. Go to www.redcross.org to find out more.
