Memorial Day is fast approaching but what IS Memorial Day exactly? Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2024 will occur on Monday, May 27. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. That is the "official" definition. To me Memorial Day is my great grandfather, my grandfather, my aunts and Uncles, my cousins, my neighbors across the street, my college buddies, my coworkers, and my friends. They all served. They all did something I wasn't prepared to do. They all had various reasons for doing so and those reason aren't important. They literally signed up to put themselves in harm's way with the clear understanding that they may have to lay down their lives in some far-off country. Why? Because at their very core they believed in what it is to be American. They knew that freedom, by any definition, is not a given and it certainly isn't free. So this weekend while you grill out or attend a concert or whatever, please if only for a moment remember what Memorial Day is really all about. As I sit here at my desk chipping away at the work day, I look up to see my collection of vintage fly fishing reels atop my bookshelf. This reel is a recent addition to my collection and is close to 90 years old. It is dated somewhere between WWI and WWII. I pick it up and begin to roll it through my fingers. Listening to the click and pawl still working, spinning freely. This reel is still capable of holding firm to a rod and bearing the weight of backing, fly line, and a leader. These models were not built with any kind of drag system, so the control with have to be with the hand. But the thought hit me: "There is still life in this reel. It can still serve a purpose." It's never too late... The Bible is full of stories of folks who thought they were too broken or disabled to do anything useful. Moses did not feel capable because he had a speech impediment. Paul lived a life of pain and was burdened by a "thorn in his side." The disciples were merely tradesmen who did not feel qualified to come alongside Jesus' ministry. David has a propensity towards sin and lust. Noah thought he was too old. But God still used them for His glory. In our weakness, He is strong. I share this to encourage you that it is never too late to do good and be a light in the world around you. If there is breath in your lungs, you have a voice. If there is strength in your hands, you can serve. If your legs are strong and you can stand, you can walk alongside a friend to encourage them. If you heart is still pumping, you can love. Find purpose and new mission in the world around you with the gifts you have.
