Today's World Mental Health Day, a day to mobilize efforts around mental health and create awareness about mental health struggles. I think it's disingenuous and misleading to continue to have conversations about mental health without fully acknowledging the context of the world we live in: hurricanes, war, displacement, injustice and more, and how all of these tragedies are affecting our collective mental health. We have to acknowledge that struggling with your mental health was never about lack of personal willpower — especially given all that is going on around us — and that it's actually not so normal that we've been forced to compartmentalize these horrific things. So this week's newsletter is a reminder that we belong to ourselves and we belong to each other, meaning our individual healing and our determination to show up for our communities matters and can have a ripple effect. Do not discount what you CAN do. Do not succumb to the idea that this is how it has to be because this is how it’s always been. Do not get so overwhelmed by the vastness of injustice that you believe the lie that all of our efforts towards healing this incredibly broken world are for naught. This World Mental Health Day, let’s take care of ourselves and each other ?? #newsletter #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #depression #anxiety #emotionalhealth #wellness #healthandwellness #Worldmentalhealthday

A handful of studies have sought to quantify the scope and scale of the mental health consequences of disasters that have occurred in the recent past. Zoya Teirstein explains how the results point to an alarming trend: The stress and trauma of losing a loved one, seeing a home destroyed, or watching a beloved community splinter has resounding mental health repercussions that stretch on for months, even years, after the disaster. ??? ? After the Storm: Addressing Trauma in Hurricane Survivors ? Trauma isn't just about what happens to us—it's about how we process it. As therapists, we have the unique opportunity to guide clients through this complex journey, especially in the face of natural disasters like hurricanes. Now more than ever, our work is critical in helping survivors reclaim their emotional lives. When a hurricane strikes, we often focus on the immediate aftermath—debris, flooding, and damaged homes. But what about the emotional toll? Many survivors are left grappling with invisible wounds: trauma, anxiety, and PTSD. Hurricanes don’t just shake the ground beneath us; they shake our emotional foundation. Mental health professionals have a critical role in helping survivors process these traumatic events. But how can we best serve those affected? The key lies in trauma-informed care, where we address not only the physical aftermath but also the emotional scars. As therapists, it's important to recognize the signs of post-traumatic stress that can appear long after the storm has passed—nightmares, hypervigilance, or even withdrawal. Specialized trauma treatments like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are incredibly effective tools that help survivors reprocess and heal from trauma caused by these natural disasters. Let's broaden the conversation about disaster recovery to include mental health support, and ensure we're equipped to help clients overcome the long-term emotional impact of hurricanes. World Mental Health Day: After Hurricane Milton, Prioritize Your Rest and Recovery I sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are safe after Hurricane Milton. My thoughts are with everyone affected. Today, as we observe World Mental Health Day—a global effort to raise awareness about mental well-being—I want to emphasize the importance of taking time to reflect and rest. After such a stressful night, let’s be grateful for life and recognize all those who have worked tirelessly to keep us safe: emergency teams, first responders, media, and community members. On this day dedicated to mental health, it’s crucial to prioritize your own well-being. According to an Ipsos report for World Mental Health Day 2024, 62% of people globally have experienced stress that significantly affects their daily lives. The WHO supports taking regular breaks, showing that rest can reduce stress and improve mental health. The WHO’s guide, “Doing What Matters in Times of Stress,” offers simple, evidence-based techniques to help manage stress . https://lnkd.in/gvYfdjPE https://lnkd.in/gUyPbuih So today, give yourself permission to rest. Stay home, recharge, and recover your strength. After a sleepless night, this is the perfect time to bring Sunday’s rest forward. Remember, taking a day off is not a luxury—it’s essential for your health and well-being. For me, running is my way of recovering. How about you?
