Hello, Connections! As a graduate student pursuing my Master's in Geotechnical Engineering at Texas Tech University, I’ve been fortunate to explore advanced topics this semester—most notably deep foundations. This image captures a remarkable high-mast light pole supported by deep foundation systems, possibly drilled shafts or driven piles, designed to resist lateral loads from wind and provide vertical load-bearing capacity. It’s inspiring to see practical applications of the theories and methods I’ve studied in class! The Deep Foundations course has equipped me with critical insights into design methodologies, soil-structure interaction, load transfer mechanisms, and construction challenges. From understanding axial and lateral capacities to evaluating the influence of subsurface conditions, this semester has been pivotal in building my technical foundation (pun intended!). I recently had the privilege of attending an insightful online workshop on Limit State Design Theory and Practice in Geotechnics and Structures organized by the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division (SMFD) of the The Canadian Geotechnical Society / La Société canadienne de géotechnique The session, led by prominent experts delved into critical topics such as the application of limit state design for deep foundations, highlighting case studies from Southern Ontario. This workshop broadened my understanding of probabilistic approaches and reliability-based design in geotechnical engineering, reinforcing the importance of integrating advanced analysis tools into engineering practice. "Geology? Why do you want to learn about rocks?" ?? At sixth form, this was the question I was often faced with, especially as Geology is a rare A Level. However today, as an Apprentice Civil Engineer at Jacobs working within ground engineering, I'm continuously benefitting from the knowledge that I have learnt in sixth form. ?? Having a background understanding of geological processes and properties has provided me with context that is vital for a Geotechnical Engineer, especially as an apprentice. I've learnt that ground conditions govern what we do as Geotechnical Engineers, and it's vital that it is understood, and that the related risks are communicated. I'm also fortunate to be working alongside many experienced Geotechnical Engineers and Geologists that I am constantly learning from. ?? At the University of Warwick we have recently begun a module titled Civil Engineering Design, which has a Geotechnical element. In order to understand the more complex engineering problems, such as within soil mechanics, geological knowledge is required. ?? Furthermore (spoiler alert), Geology is not just rocks! In the A Level course we covered a variety of areas including climate change, evolutionary biology and even touched upon the solar system. It's a science which has always fascinated me, and it's application into Civil Engineering is especially interesting. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Beauchamp City Sixth Form for continuing to offer the subject despite challenges, and hope that they continue to do so in the future! ??Don't be afraid to study something that you find interesting even if it is seen as 'unconventional', you never know where it could take you! #geology #geotechnicalengineering #degreeapprentice #civilengineering

The XVIII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (#ECSMGE2024) starts on Monday, August 26, in Lisbon.
