?? Exploring Global Human Modification with Google Earth Engine ?? The Global Human Modification dataset (gHM) offers a comprehensive measure of human impact on terrestrial lands at a 1 square-kilometer resolution, using advanced techniques in Remote Sensing and GIS. This powerful tool quantifies human activities such as urbanization, agriculture, transportation, and energy production, providing crucial insights for Environmental Monitoring and Land Use Change analysis. This data quantifies the extent and intensity of human activities, ranging from 0.0 (no modification) to 1.0 (highly modified), based on five key anthropogenic stressors: ??? Human Settlement: Includes population density and built-up areas. ?? Agriculture: Encompasses cropland and livestock density. ?? Transportation: Maps major and minor roads, two-track roads, and railroads. ?? Mining & Energy Production: Tracks resource extraction and associated infrastructures. ? Electrical Infrastructure: Captures power lines and nighttime lights. The resulting data visualization, created through Spatial Analysis and GeoSpatial Data processing in Google Earth Engine, helps us understand the extent of human influence globally and supports efforts in Sustainable Development and Conservation. Leveraging this dataset allows researchers and policymakers to conduct in-depth Global Mapping and make informed decisions for a more sustainable future. #RemoteSensing #GIS #EnvironmentalMonitoring #Urbanization #SustainableDevelopment #LandUseChange #GlobalMapping #Conservation #SpatialAnalysis #DataVisualization #GeoSpatialData

Announcing our BCS Conference 2024 speakers! Andy Wells, Mustard Geo Talk Title: Everything, everywhere, all at once (almost)” – Is satellite imagery finally reaching its potential? Synopsis: It is fair to say that satellite imagery of the earth’s surface has never quite met its potential. Yes, there have been innumerable successful projects and programmes, however, the use as a as a mainstream operational capability for industry and governments has not quite been achieved. Difficulty in data availability, access, commercial terms and conditions, analysis, visualisation and delivery to meet client need have all conspired to limit use. Has this (or is this) about to change? This talk focusses on the use of earth observation across a range of map production and update requirements across a range of example applications (climate, insurance, security, risk, asset monitoring, resource management etc.) It will seek to demonstrate developments in five key elements of the decision support chain. The talk is delivered by a geographer (not a cartographer) and aimed at non-satellite specialists. It will seek to provide a brief but useful insight into the potential of earth observation across a wide range of cartographic fields. The focus on potential value and opportunity created for the end-user will be balanced by views on limitations, viability, cost and long-term sustainability. Ultimately it will be the decision of the professional cartographer as to the current and future value of earth observation and how best to exploit. Bio: Andy has enjoyed a 30-year career applying geography and geospatial technology to meet the opportunities and challenges of both industry and government – globally. Describing himself as a geographer from birth, an initial love of the subject formed at school was continued at university via a degree in geography (joint honours with physics and electronics) and, thereafter, a PhD in remote sensing / terrain analysis. Following a brief period in academic research, he has spent the last 30 years in business development, management and board positions across start-up’s, SME’s and multi-nationals - always focused on how geography (often in partnership with satellite technology and earth observation) can provide business intelligence to make better decisions. From supporting elections in Nigeria to deployable geo-intelligence for the MoD, agricultural production in the UK and marine environmental protection in Malaysia, he has enjoyed working in 20+ markets, across 15+ countries. More recently, much of his work has focused on climate and nature positive activity (driven by global need, governmental policy and commercial interest). https://lnkd.in/eCQrMjR
