Which crops do we need to graft in CEA and why? Grapes of course are a well known?grafted?crop, as are apples and other stone fruits. They have been grafted for centuries to avoid similar issues originating from soil-borne disease. It’s taken a while for us to catch up, but with every area in CEA being scrutinized for additional efficiency, it is no surprise grafting is trying to become the norm in the industry. For farmers cultivating bean family crops such as Soya Beans, Cowpea Common Bean, French Beans among others, often get to interact with the The Bean Fly; a common destructive #pest that lays eggs near the leaf stalks of the tender/ young leaves where eggs tend to hatch into maggots that later cause damage and plant loss. This happens mostly at 3-4 weeks from emergence but later crops are sometimes attacked. To mitigate these effects, farmers are often advised to; - Practice crop rotation with non host crops e.g maize - Maintain farm hygiene and sanitation - Scouting fields after planting and proper weed control - Use of dressed-seeds to avoid attack by the bean fly #Legumes #BeanFamily #Seeds #beans

The video I captured this morning highlight the damage caused by the tuta absoluta, a devastating pest of tomato crops. They clearly show how the larvae of this insect burrow into tomato leaves, reducing photosynthesis and stunting plant growth. This threat is of major concern to tomato producers worldwide. My first poster! I talked about my preliminary results from the first year out of a three year study. They indicated that while pest pressure, including infestations from Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus and Lepidoptera: Crambidae, were insignificant the use of cover crops led to a decrease in rice yield compared to the fallow control plots.... I know this sounds negative but it just takes some time for the soil to acclimate to the cover crops! Looking forward to the coming years! ?? ?? #LSUAgCenter #ClimateSmart

Slugs are a very common and significant pest in all crops. While they are present all year-round, they can be very damaging in spring. High populations can devastate crop establishment as they feed on germinating seedlings. ALL crops should be monitored closely for slug presence during establishment and the threat dealt with accordingly. Direct drilled crops are typically most at risk as the thatch and direct drill slots provide food and refuge for slugs. That is why it is important to use slug bait in all direct drill situations. The best way to monitor slug presence is to leave out some wet sacks overnight in the paddock. When you go back the next day, count how many slugs are under the sacks. Even if slug bait has been applied, continue to monitor as rebaiting may be necessary if there is a large population.
