INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Volunteer Field Research Assistants in Sea Turtle Nesting Project (2025 Season)! From March until October?each year, this project conducts?nightly beach patrols?(rain or shine) to encounter nesting females (primarily leatherbacks and hawksbill). The goal is to monitor the nesting populations and to protect the females and their eggs from illegal harvest and beach erosion. The work is a mix of conservation measures and scientific data collection, marking individuals to estimate population size, collect different types of data on the morphology and growth rate of individuals, record the reproductive output of females, and calculate the hatching success of nests and the number of hatchlings produced. Further samples are collected to conduct diet studies using stable isotope analysis, and a few satellite transmitters are attached to turtles each year to study the habitat use of our turtles. One of my very first writing gigs was as an unpaid intern (cue ?? spooky early career flashbacks!) for the Sierra Club. I was passionately naive—or naively passionate—thinking that my words alone could change the world. I was sure that if I found the right phrase, people would stop deforestation, rehabilitate neglected lands, and finally take action to care for the planet. Since then, I’ve come back down to earth but tried to live by those values: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Repair. Repurpose. Restore. It’s funny how things come full circle. Now, I use my words to support land remediation efforts. When developers work to bring derelict or contaminated sites back into use, many don’t realize there are tax relief options that can help offset these costs. It’s a way to revitalise brownfield sites instead of abandoning them for greener pastures. If you’re working on or thinking about taking on a project like this, let’s chat.
