I agree with Laura Zabel (herself a formidable cultural and civic leader in the arts in the Twin Cities) - it’s heartening to see media coverage that attends to the living reality of artists. There are some exciting examples of innovative solutions in support of keeping artists in the cities they make culturally vibrant through their work. Policies like guaranteed basic income for artists are not unattainable and here are some early signs of successful implementation.
This is an amazing, in-depth article in The Seattle Times -- so great to see a major paper covering the needs of individual artists and culture bearers in this way. And I'm happy to be able to share the impact of Springboard for the Arts Guaranteed Income work as more communities consider how to use basic income to create shared prosperity and greater economic justice. https://lnkd.in/geRQSP2k

How easy is it to cross a #border with a #drone? Alarmingly easy. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has documented over 25,000 #drone sightings along a mere 200-mile stretch of the #Texas border, just south of #Austin, the vibrant hub of SXSW. While the technology to counter these incursions exists, it's imperative that it reaches those on the front lines. As we gear up for #SXSW2025, Dedrone is proud to announce that we've advanced to the PanelPicker phase with our proposed session, "Drones: The New Border Threat." This session will showcase exclusive data from the border and feature insights from Carl Landrum, former Chief Patrol Agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and now Vice President at Dedrone. If you're invested in understanding the growing challenge of #drone incursions, strategies to mitigate these threats, and the role of legislation in fortifying our borders, we urge you to support our session. Simply create an SXSW account and cast your vote by clicking the up arrow on our session page: VOTE TODAY: https://lnkd.in/gxKN_2uV Don’t wait—voting ends on August 18! #panelpicker #counterdrone #bordersecurity

I love bold ideas for reshaping the way we support arts & culture in our country. This is an interesting one: what if we funded operating costs as infrastructure? "As with infrastructure projects such as the building and maintenance of highways, funding cultural institutions will directly support employment: Culture in the United States employs?about five million people?and pumps?about $1 trillion?into the economy annually. New funding would boost local economies, cultivate a more equitable arts sector, and promote and protect arts organizations in small and medium-size cities. It would help to disentangle larger arts institutions from the largess of wealthy individuals and corporations, which currently wield an inordinate and thorny amount of influence. (Think of the?Sackler family.) And it could defang some of the most pernicious culture-war arguments against arts funding, since it’s much harder to object to paying to fix a museum’s leaky roof than to paying to exhibit a photograph." A good read! Thanks for sharing it Joe Waters!

The National Archives at Kansas City has reopened its permanent exhibit gallery, “We the People,” to the public. The exhibit, which primarily features records from the National Archives at Kansas City, focuses on how records impact the lives of every American. The exhibit is divided into five sections, each containing interactive displays. The first gallery, “We the People,” introduces visitors to the process of becoming an American and reveals details about immigrants seeking citizenship in the United States. The second gallery, “Form a More Perfect Union,” provides a glimpse into records that show the evolution of our democracy. The third gallery, “Provide for the Common Defense” showcases records of our nation’s activities during wartime, both on the home front and abroad. The final two galleries highlight the human spirit and ingenuity needed to realize America's promise, illustrated through records gleaned from the ever-growing collection of records held by the National Archives. Admission is free. The National Archives is tasked with storing records on behalf of the American people and making those records accessible to the public. https://lnkd.in/gPTQ__xv

One of the most brilliant aspects of the recent few weeks has been CIVIC SQUARE’s festival on 3 degree futures & neighborhoods and building everyday neighborhood-level resilience with its focus on resilience infrastructure civic investment. Many great things stood out, but one that resonated deeply with me was the precision of a particular talk. It addressed the British Imperial State rather than the British Empire, highlighting that the true beneficiaries of the Empire were those who profited from the extraction capabilities of the Imperial State. These beneficiaries were few, and their colonization affected not only people around the world but also those living in Britain. This nuanced understanding felt crucial because it allows us to build new solidarities against the Empire that ruled over us, and the beneficiaries who took advantage and became new rulers and overlords in different guises across the world. Being precise about this is vital if we are to construct the necessary politics for a real transition and pots colonial tomorrow

Houston Dynamo Football Club has some really festive events planned for May 4th (who doesn't love StarWars), but that day has a serious spark of conversation for higher education decision makers. Kent State University (https://lnkd.in/g85-7PNg) is one of the historical sites that should influence talk of Army National Guard presence on campuses. Principles of de-escalation serve ADR, law enforcement, emergency room, and many other professions/professionals. Additionally, failure to self-regulate--and how do student protesters manage individual participant behavior any better than fraternities, or schools themselves--has resulted in third party scrutiny and oversight increases (not just Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration, but also professional organizations and government agencies). How do we best promote coexistence of sometimes competing values? Exercise of 1st Amendment rights with behaviors that don't cause fear or threat of harm; confident and engaged youth tempered with fact of lack of life experience and limited perspective (more [internet] information not equivalent to more wisdom or discernment); community-tied, open spaces with secure environments for learners... https://lnkd.in/g89T4ss2?
