Assessing Medical Specialist Training Programme. New responsibilities await; this time, I will be an assessor evaluating Malaysia's medical specialist training programme. My role as the assessor is quite long, five years to be exact, and the appointment is by the Malaysian Medical Council.? ? Among my responsibilities as a panel penilai or assessor is to examine and ensure that medical specialist training programmes (to train future medical specialists in Malaysia at higher institutions) achieve high standards. We will examine if the offered programmes are able to produce?medical specialists who will serve with adequate knowledge, skills and who are effectiveness. Remember that?medicine's present and future challenges differ greatly from those of five or ten years ago. Amendment of the Medical Act 1971 by the Dewan Rakyat, Parliament of Malaysia 1. Specialist Registration and Training: I have closely followed the ongoing issue regarding the specialist registration, particularly for trainees who have completed parallel pathway specialist training under the Ministry of Health Malaysia. This issue has been under discussion for some time, including during my tenure as Director General of Health and President of the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). Consequently, I issued a statement on 24 June 2021, following a meeting with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) on 15 June 2021. The decision from this meeting was presented and approved at the MMC 407th Meeting on 22 June 2021. The content of that press statement remains accessible on the MMC website. 2. Recognition Process Disputes: Despite thorough deliberations and engagements with relevant parties, as explained in the press statement, the recognition process for international specialist qualifications in the parallel pathway training remains disputed, causing significant discussions within the medical community. Questions and conflicts persist. Thus, the decision by the Minister of Health to consult the Attorney General's Chambers on this matter was both prudent and commendable. 3. Minister of Health's Efforts: I watched the Minister of Health's speech during the second reading of the amendments bill with great interest. I commend Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad for his political will to address this critical issue within just six months of his tenure. His efforts have garnered strong support from major professional bodies and associations, indicating thorough engagement and understanding of the technical aspects involved. 1/2
