I keep coming back to this article because of its layered exploration of heritage: the interplay between historic practices, established structures, and the exciting potential in new approaches. Ultimately, it's the genuine reflection on how the system is assessing itself and evolving that resonates with me. It’s a powerful reminder of the value of honest dialogue within the field. #letskeeptheconversationgoing, #grapplingwithhistoriclegacieswhileweembracenewtechnologies
A collaboration between Oberlin student leader Isabel Handa and professor Amy Margaris led to a profound and culturally significant event: the return of an ancestor's skull to Hawaii. What insights did this process reveal about museum and Native Hawaiian perspectives? Their journey is not just a story of repatriation but also a lesson about trust, respect, and open-mindedness towards Native people, as museums' navigate collaborative relationships with indigenous communities. Conversations: Let’s Talk about Death What does talking about death reveal to us about life and the way we choose to live it? What can we share and learn from each other about different cultural traditions that honour loved ones who have passed? What is the experience like for people who work with matters of death every day? Join us in this informal gathering in a conversation café format to talk about death with like-minded learners. A list of questions similar to the ones asked above will be provided to spark curiosity and stimulate thought-provoking conversations. Participants will meet first in small breakout groups, and then share insights with the larger group. IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend that you visit the ROM exhibition, Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery, before you attend this program. The Museum opens at 10 AM, and your Conversations ticket includes same-day admission to the exhibition. For more information, please visit the ROM website at: https://lnkd.in/gJw9evEp

???? Today and yesterday MCA was at the European Commission Expert Group for Cultural Heritage ?? A wonderful stage where Member States, EU representatives and Civil Society organizations convene to talk about the pressing issues in the sector. Here are 3 takeaways: ?? The European Heritage Hub presented their latest achievements and developments: the "Heritage Library", a repository for heritage-related materials, and the "Policy Monitor", mapping out policies impacting heritage across European, national and local level. We are glad to see such an important initiative keeping up the good work. ??? The Subgroup for the dialogue with the art market presented their findings and recommendations. As members of the ANCHISE Project (Horizon Europe), we welcome this initiative and the active dialogue with Art Market professionals stemming from it: we can't wait to hear more on the next meetings and we thank all the involved actors. ?? During the open floor, we presented our new Action Group for Digital & AI, in collaboration with Culture Action Europe: an advocacy group for CAE & MCA members aimed at bringing the Cultural Sector perspective to the Digital policies in EU. Our civil society colleagues were there with us, like Europeana , NEMO - Network of European Museum Organisations Pearle* Live Performance Europe * International Council of Museums (ICOM) ACCR - Association des Centres culturels de rencontre ENCATC Europa Nostra and many more

I learned yesterday that my Monograph on the History of the Museum of London will get a paperback version in August; 31,99GBP being much cheaper than the hardback (and more bendy, so easier to scribble your notes in): https://lnkd.in/e_QZdcA5. I really enjoyed writing this book, and given the charged and febrile public discourse around museums and their social role, I think it remains an important read for anyone interested in how museums (and other cultural institutions) approach, for example, decolonisation, or social justice in a contemporary context. Research on the history of museums and other cultural institutions is important as it helps us to understand key debates such as decolonization, restitution, representation of marginalized groups, and evolving museum functions. And, understanding museums' historical relationships with empire is crucial for critically evaluating practices, and reimagining their societal roles. This historical perspective provides insights into how museums have shaped cultural narratives, reinforced power dynamics, and produced knowledge over time. It informs efforts to make museums more inclusive and responsive to contemporary needs, addresses ongoing power imbalances in cultural representation, and enriches public debates about cultural heritage and national identity. And, by the time you have finished my monograph, my edited collection (which I am editing with my colleague Dr Matthew Jones), Museums, Empire and Decolonial Praxis, due to be published by Routledge in 2025, will be available for you to read ??

This week's election, from the top of the ballot all the way down, will impact the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Not just in who represents the nation at this anniversary, but in what funding is available, what programs are valued, what narratives are decried as "woke" or the wrong kind of patriotism, and whether people want to commemorate or engage in heritage tourism. For those doing the planning, the work will be harder. It's a great time to find out what the 250th planning effort looks like in the places you live in and care about, and what you can do to support the museums, historic sites, libraries, humanities organizations, and other stakeholders who are working to create an inclusive, inspiring, and community-building experience in 2026 and beyond.

Every year, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance holds a public consultation on the next federal budget. The BC Museums Association's 2025 Federal budget letter to the Committee has been published on our website with four key recommendations: 1. Increase Museums Assistance Program (MAP) funding by $1 million per year over the next 5 years to mitigate the impact of inflation while the heritage sector awaits the new National Museum Policy; 2. Advance the implementation of the UNDRIP Action Plan and the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by investing in the co-development of a National Framework on Indigenous Cultural Heritage Rights; 3. Increase Young Canada Works (YCW) core funding by an amount equivalent to the recent supplemental funding levels to provide stability and predictability for the program and its beneficiaries in the heritage sector; 4. Create a one-time investment of $100,000,000 to fund infrastructure improvements, building upgrades, and climate change mitigation measures for arts, culture, and heritage organizations. Docents - you rock. I’m always so full of admiration for docents - volunteers who act as guides in a museum or art gallery. Why? Because they ?? Do it for love, not money? ?? Undertake extensive training to learn the facts, the stories, the backgrounds to the works of art ?? Are on their feet all day? ?? Use their voices all day Having trained docents to enhance their vocal impact for speaking in large echoing spaces, I always stress the importance of vocal warm ups before taking a group through the museum or art gallery. And the same applies to anyone preparing to speak in an acoustically challenging environment. Always warm up the voice: ?? Lip trills? ?? Breathing exercises? ?? Articulation warm ups Just taking 5 mins to prepare will help to avoid any voice strain. Great to spend time with the docents at the always outstanding Victoria and Albert museum, London. I hope you found some of my tips useful. ???? Helping Good Speakers Become Great Speakers.

It's a critical time for our sector to really lean into what we are and what our value proposition is to arts and culture. So grateful to have research to dig into to help us through this time of reflection and reframing... Go ADC Consulting !!
**NEW REPORT** Arts service organizations (ASOs) play a critical role in nourishing the United States arts ecosystem and have been doing so for generations. Led by cultural strategist Alejandra Duque Cifuentes and Senior Research and Planning Consultant, Carrie Blake of ADC Consulting LLC, in collaboration with an Advisory Cohort of arts workers, this multi-phase research project began in May 2023 with background research to understand what is already known about arts service organizations (ASOs) and ground the process in the experiences and perspectives of ASOs, their workers, partners, funders, and beneficiaries.
