13 years ago, my friend and former classmate Katherine Kubler, approached me about her desire to expose the industry that abused, neglected and tortured us when we were teenagers. “Absolutely yes” is what I told her and 13 years later I feel lucky to have been able to contribute and participate in what is now a Netflix docuseries; The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping. Although my resolve to help bring an end to this terrible, abusive, unregulated, manipulative industry has always been strong, I really struggled to decide if this was the kind of thing I really wanted to post on my Linkedin. What if people judge me, or worse, judge my parents? Even 20 years later, it's hard not to feel fearful (and a bit embarrassed) about "outing yourself" as a TTI survivor. In a way it was easier to out myself to Netflix than it was to Linkedin LOL. However, my feelings about this have softened. Particularly since I work in public health, an industry that is dedicated to fostering a healthy and safe world for everyone, but particularly the most vulnerable populations such as children. Today, this industry is still alive and well. Children die in these places, most recently THIS month when?a 12 year old boy died at Trails Carolina Wilderness. I would be remiss to not share this widely and loudly with my network of public health friends and colleagues. We, as a society, need to do better for families in crisis. When there are significant gaps in resources for kids and families, these types of predatory businesses thrive. I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I know this is not the way to deal with a child or teenager that is going through a hard time. ?I hope you’ll watch the trailer linked below and tune in when it’s released on Netflix on March 5th. I have to admit it upfront: I'm a huge Bad Boys fan. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence make an unbeatable buddy cop duo. BB4 had me laughing out loud multiple times, and the action scenes were just fantastic. And it's Miami! But let's address the elephant in the room: the slap incident involving Will Smith. It's a topic I've found myself thinking about frequently, and it brings me to a broader point about fame and influence. When individuals reach a certain level of celebrity, power, or success, there's a risk of surrounding oneself with yes-men who validate every action or statement, leading to a detachment from reality. They can lose the ability to discern appropriate behavior and act on impulse when reason is required. We all stumble; I've certainly had my share of metaphorical and actual slaps. The key takeaway here is the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who aren't afraid to keep you grounded. Meiyazhagan Movie: It seems a misnomer to write about a movie on LinkedIn, but the core themes and narrative are astounding and deserve to be spoken about and appreciated. This will encourage the emergence of more such themes. The context will resonate with those who grew up in the 80s with a middle-class, small-town upbringing—the joy of owning a cycle, being content with the house, the surroundings, trees, temples, large extended families, and a close-knit neighborhood that knew everything about us. Then, one day, the need to migrate to the city for survival uproots everything. I know that feeling, as I have been in that space myself. The story follows one of the lead characters, Arul, as he visits his native village to attend his cousin sister’s wedding years after he leaves the home town . This journey changes his life experience and the weight of perceptions he carried for years. For me, here’s what makes this movie special: *We rarely see male role models being vulnerable. Society has long perpetuated the idea that “boys don’t cry” or “mard ko dard nahi hota.” Unfortunately, toxic masculinity is emulated in many films, reinforcing stereotypes that men should not express emotions. This movie breaks that mold by embracing vulnerabilities and acknowledging them, especially in a world where masculinity is rarely associated with vulnerability. It's refreshing to see men cry when faced with loss, despair, or feeling overwhelmed.
