As healthcare providers, it's our responsibility to prioritize active listening, acknowledge patient concerns, and work collaboratively to address their needs. We must create environments where patients feel empowered to advocate for themselves, seek second opinions, and engage in open dialogue about sensitive topics like abnormally heavy periods, contraception, and reproductive health. Let's commit to fostering trusting relationships with our patients, valuing their input, and ensuring that their voices are heard and respected.Moreover, it's crucial for healthcare providers to take the time to understand their patients' beliefs, desires, and unique circumstances. This woman declined medical treatment in lieu of more holistic options. I'm not sure if she verbalized this to her provider, but I can't help but think she needed more education to understand the severity of her situation. She could've taken the holistic route in addition to modern medicine. By incorporating patient preferences into treatment plans and providing comprehensive education about their options, we can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health. Today is International Women's Day! ?? Last week, members of our team attended the American Heart Association Go Red for Women event in Buffalo. We'd like to use this time to share some important information on women's health relating to vascular health: ??Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. ??Pregnancy and menopause may impact a woman's risk in heart disease and stroke. ??Cardiovascular disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. ??Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of new moms and accounts for over one-third of maternal deaths. Black women have some of the highest maternal mortality rates. ??Approximately 57.5% of total stroke deaths are in women. ??Most cardiac and stroke events can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes, such as moving more, eating smart and managing blood pressure. ??Women continue to be underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, as well as in research. In fact, women occupy nearly half of all U.S. jobs (48%), but only 27% of jobs in STEM fields. More than half of pediatric migraine patients experience 1 to 4 attacks per month, significantly impacting their daily lives. While much of migraine research has focused on adults, there is an increasing need for studies on treatment options for children and adolescents. We are participating in a clinical study to advance migraine care in pediatric patients. Do levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior vary between weekdays and weekends in youth with pediatric multiple sclerosis? This study's results suggest that youth with pediatric MS and controls were less physically active and more sedentary on weekends than weekdays. Measuring these behaviors is important for potential symptom management through lifestyle approaches. Today is Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Awareness Day, a cause deeply personal to me. ?? Type 1 #diabetes affects over 1.6 million Americans, including approximately 200,000 children and adolescents. While it requires relentless management, not everyone has equal access to the resources they need. Health disparities are a critical issue: Black and Hispanic communities face higher rates of diabetes-related complications due to systemic inequities in healthcare access. Individuals without insurance or in underserved areas often struggle to afford insulin or obtain life-saving technology like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). It’s time to address these gaps. We need greater advocacy for affordable insulin, equitable healthcare access, and increased funding for research to support all individuals living with T1D. Together, we can create change. This significant initiative aims to raise awareness about CHD and emphasize the importance of researching this condition. Let’s delve into some essential facts: CHD Prevalence: During this week (and every week), 705 babies will be born in the United States with a congenital heart defect. That’s a staggering number, highlighting the urgency of awareness and support. What Is CHD?: A congenital heart defect (CHD) is a heart problem that’s present at birth. It affects approximately 1 out of every 100 newborns, which translates to about 40,000 babies annually in the United States alone. Lifelong Impact: When we think of CHD, we often picture newborns. However, these heart conditions are lifelong. As babies grow into children and adults, they still require ongoing monitoring and treatment. UVA Health offers a specialized CHD clinic for adults, ensuring comprehensive care across all ages. It Can Happen to Anyone: While some CHDs have a genetic link, most occur in families with no history or risk factors. Genetic counseling and testing are crucial if someone in your family has had a CHD. Remember, CHDs impact diverse populations. Silent CHDs: Thanks to advancing technology, we’ve become better at detecting CHDs. However, some people reach adulthood without knowing they have a CHD. Shockingly, CHDs remain the leading cause of unexpected adult heart deaths for individuals under age 35. Beyond the Heart: CHDs can affect more than just the heart. Complications may include hearing loss, breathing difficulties, developmental disabilities, or delays. It’s a multi-faceted challenge that extends beyond cardiac health. Global Issue: While our focus during CHD week centers on the United States, CHDs occur worldwide. This underscores the importance of health equity and global awareness.
