According to a study by Mental Health America, over 50 million Americans are experiencing mental illness, with over half of those individuals reporting they are not receiving treatment. Misunderstanding and stigma about mental illness are large factors in a lack of mental health care. National Start the Conversation Day is an opportunity to change the way we think about mental illness and support those who are seeking help. Mental illness often goes hand-in-hand with social isolation, which is why reaching out to someone you’re close with when you sense something is off can be a great first step in helping loved ones seek effective treatments. As we begin Mental Health Awareness Month, it's important to acknowledge the prevalence of mental illness that exists today. Shockingly, 20% of adults experience a mental illness each year, yet only 10% receive treatment. Even worse, 1 in 20 adults experience a serious mental health illness each year, but only 3/4 receive treatment. Did you know that half of all mental illness starts by age 14, and 75% by age 24? Reducing the stigma around mental health is imperative. We can all make a difference by educating ourselves and others about mental illness, practice compassion, offer support and encouragement, and be mindful of our language. Let's #TakeAMentalHealthMoment and support the National Alliance on Mental Illness (#NAMI) by raising awareness about mental health. Together, we can make a difference.

Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, it's essential to challenge the stigma surrounding conversations about mental health - especially when it comes to suicidal thoughts. A recent Samaritans survey revealed that while 74% of people feel comfortable discussing general mental health, only 45% feel the same about opening up about suicide. This is something we need to address. Talking about these difficult emotions doesn't have to be intimidating. By creating a space for open, compassionate conversations, we can offer support to those who need it most - and maybe even save lives. Let's continue to break the silence and remind people they are not alone. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealthMatters #YouAreNotAlone #BreakTheStigma
