Experiential therapy uses expressive tools and activities—such as role-playing, props, arts and crafts, music, and recreation—to help clients engage with and process past emotional experiences and relationships. According to Psychology Today, focusing on these activities allows clients to “better identify emotions associated with success, disappointment, responsibility, and self-esteem.” Common forms of experiential therapy include animal-assisted therapy, play therapy, art therapy, and mindfulness. Research shows that experiential approaches, such as music therapy, can significantly reduce stress-related symptoms in mental healthcare settings. With the guidance of a trained experiential therapist, clients can explore and process distressing emotions that may have been previously blocked. This therapeutic approach is effective in treating a range of mental health conditions, including complex trauma and behavioral disorders. At Amend Treatment, we integrate experiential therapy with evidence-based modalities to provide comprehensive mental health care.
