Women's Health. Often a great topic of discourse. Can we be doing more? Should we be doing more? What more is there to do? From local anaesthesia for local biopsy during Pap-Smears to a National Screening methods, I often talk to doctors across Psychiatry, Pathology and Radiology about women's health in Ireland. In Psychiatry; Perinatal mental health is so vital, attempting to de-stigmatise and promote consistency of treatment during and post-pregnancy. With Radiologists, I discuss BreastCheck which is an easily accessible service for women aged 50-69 to check for Breast cancer regularly. Leading in awareness and ease of access, the service is used by thousands of women in Ireland annually. (Over 166,000 in 2021 alone). Across Pathology, it is the Cervical Screening and biopsies from BreastCheck follow-up that are the face of women's health. Cervical screening is available free of charge annually for any woman aged 25-65. It's a vast topic, one that will require more than a singular post to cover, but I'd love to know, what are my connections' experience with women's health? I certainly have several horror stories. Care to share your thoughts or experiences below?

I'm excited to share that I am one of the authors of a newly published letter in “Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology” , titled "The Hammersmith Infant Neurological Exam Scoring Aid supports early detection for infants with high probability of cerebral palsy." This letter highlights the critical role of the HINE Scoring Aid in facilitating early detection and intervention for infants at high risk of CP, optimizing developmental outcomes. Our HINE Scoring Aid consolidates crucial information into a single, easy-to-use tool, streamlining the interpretation process for clinicians. This tool supports more efficient and accurate clinical assessments, ensuring timely referrals for early interventions. Collaborating with an incredible team, including Darcy Fehlings, Amber Makino, Paige Church, Karen Thomas, Maureen Luther, Sophie Lam-Damji, Brigitte Vollmer, Leena Haataja, Frances Cowan, Dominico Romeo, Joanne George, and Swetlana Kumar, has been an honor. Alcohol is a toxin to the brain and many other organs. There is no way to sugarcoat it, especially in teens and young adults whose brains are not fully developed. Dr. Daniel Amen is a psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist who has clinics all over the United States and references 5 of the most common ways alcohol affects the human brain. ?? Teens who start to drink heavily between the ages of 12-17 start with less brain volume, and they lose more over time. (Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, 2014) ?? Lowers blood flow to the brain. With the brain using 20% of the overall blood flow, it's critical for everyday thinking. (Brain fog, impulsivity, poor decision-making) These are the last things our teens need more of... ??1-2 glasses of wine per day, considered "moderate" driving, leads to atrophy of the part of the brain used for memory, mood and critical thinking. No protective effects were found. (BMJ, 2017) ??Decrease the amount of neurogenesis (new brain cell growth). Only animal studies were performed, but these show a 58-63% reduction in the survival of new brain cells. ??A series published in the Journals of Gerontology shows that moderate to heavy drinkers have a 57% risk of dementia. Check out Dr. Amen's Ted Talk. It's a game changer regarding how you will view your brain and brain health. #alcoholabuse #teenmentalhealth #pediatrics #parenting #collegelife

Lasted News| News medical| KMD Bioscience Thursday News Can heparin bring new hope to the fight against dementia? It is estimated that Alzheimer's disease is the fifth leading cause of death among people aged 65 and above in 2021, with over 10 million new cases of dementia diagnosed worldwide each year. In a recent study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, researchers explored the potential of heparin therapy in delaying the diagnosis of dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease in individuals aged 65 and above. Their research findings indicate that heparin therapy is associated with a one-year delay in dementia diagnosis in the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) and a two-year delay in the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), suggesting that this well-known anticoagulant has protective potential and the use of heparin can delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease. https://lnkd.in/dJnPExyr https://lnkd.in/gGxnjc6x #DementiaResearch #AlzheimersAwareness #HeparinHope #MedicalBreakthrough #KMDBioscience #MolecularPsychiatry #Neuroscience #AgingHealth #BrainHealth #DementiaCare #AlzheimersDisease #HealthcareInnovation #AnticoagulantResearch #Newsmedical
