Psychological Safety at work!!! This is such an important point. First, we have all experienced the “buffoonery “ of diversity and representation without inclusion. Our current Government is given as an example. Second, leaders, when you get around to recruiting “the first….” into your organisation and especially to your board or to senior leader roles what do you do to protect their mental well-being? My personal experience having been “the first” in 99% of my roles was being thrown to a pack of wolves who thought my Black body was there for sport rather than because of my talent and the opportunity for collaboration. It’s horrific and not everyone survives. Talk to me or any racial equity consultant if you want to prevent and/or repair this psychological assault on global majority employees. We deserve to be protected. The Equalities Act 2010 says so. And we are not the ones creating the hostile environment. #psychological safety #racial mediation
“Too many times, Black performers – particularly Black actresses – are left to face the storm of online abuse after committing the crime of getting a job on their own.” I named this in 2022 in conversation with Afua Hirsch Adjoa Andoh and more at The Conduit discussing representation in entertainment and film. It’s all well and good condemning racist comments regarding the response to Francesca Amewudah-Rivers being cast as Juliet alongside Tom Holland in Romeo and Juliet - but merely ‘condemning racist comments’ does nothing to meaningfully address racism. What are Jamie Lloyd and other production houses, theatre companies, agents, talent managers doing to adequately safeguard and ensure the psychological safety of black talent AND black staff, when castings for shows are announced, particularly in roles that are typically aligned with white norms? What meaningful support and wrap around care is being provided? What work are they doing in the arts and at home to address racism beyond condemning it? We have a serious problem with systemic racism in this country it is violent and damaging - merely condemning racist comments doesn’t address it. This happens time and time again and white management and companies need to be doing a whole lot more. Click play for my take: Read the full Guardian piece where over 800 Black women and non-binary actors are speaking up about abuse and lack of support they receive. https://lnkd.in/efDkTzAN

PSA: Black creatives exist. Black voices and perspectives matter. There are Black professionals who are excelling in your industry. If you find yourself in a space or on a stage virtual and/or IRL or in a board room, where there are no Black people or there is only ONE token Black person, ask why? And if the answer is “we couldn’t find anyone” or there simply isn’t an answer or response to the call out—?????? that’s a red flag and there is probably a need for reformation.

Did you know that in 1841 in Philadelphia, Black Underground Railroad, church, and business leaders formed an organization to encourage people to stop drinking? The ‘Temperance’ organizations had more than 6 chapters and 1400 members by 1841, in Philadelphia alone. Check out the Blog https://lnkd.in/eYvKQ7AG or go directly to the framework https://lnkd.in/exn4Pm_T We keep finding more evidence Black people in Philly had an organization culture, leveraging group structures to provide support for living, and even thriving, despite a world wide system of anti-Black terror and oppression. Many of these organizations kept the pathways out of plantations and into freedom open and safe. We estimate that they supported a yearly flow of 1000+ freedom seekers through Philadelphia (see the storyarc to see how we came to that number). We’ve also recognized that it’s somewhat confusing to keep track of all these groups. Fortunately W.E.B. Du Bois set a precedent for understanding how organizations developed with his incredible visualization techniques. We have followed in his footsteps with a new visual framework for understanding Black organizations in Philadelphia in the 1800s. This one is open for comment - we’re kicking off the collab. So let us know what you think. Got another angle? we want to know. We want to bring in community knowledge and refine this diagram over time. Take a look at our estimated freedom seeker volume and let us know what you think about that too.

Remembering Thomas Dilward (1840–1902), a pioneering figure in American entertainment whose contributions often go unrecognized. Dilward, credited with coining the phrase “hunky-dory” (meaning “everything is all right”), was one of the first Black entertainers to bring authentic Black dance to the white American stage. At a time when Black performers were largely excluded, Dilward’s unique talent and stage presence broke barriers, though he faced immense challenges and discrimination. Known by his stage name, “Japanese Tommy,” Dilward’s identity was often obscured due to the biases of the era. Despite this, he performed with white minstrel companies before the Civil War—a rare accomplishment for Black artists of his time. Minstrel shows, which were rife with racism and degrading stereotypes, limited opportunities for Black performers, forcing many to play “blackface” characters as a means of survival in an exclusionary industry. Today, we recognize Dilward’s contributions as a complex chapter in the history of civil rights and American entertainment. His legacy reminds us of the resilience of Black artists who navigated prejudice to share their craft, often at a high personal cost. Let’s continue to celebrate and acknowledge these trailblazers who laid the groundwork for progress, even in the most challenging circumstances. #BlackHistory #ThomasDilward #Resilience #EntertainmentHistory #Trailblazer #DiversityInTheArts #CivilRights

October is Black History Month and the theme this year is reclaiming narratives - taking back ownership of the stories that define black culture, contributions and identity. ? ? Reclaiming narratives isn't just about representation. It is deeply connected to people's mental health and wellbeing, because the stories that are told about us in society influence our identities, self-esteem and sense of belonging. When black individuals and communities are misrepresented or left out, it can contribute to feelings of marginalisation and mental distress.? ? At West Sussex Mind, we are here to support everyone in our community.? ? ?? For more information, resources and events during Black History Month, visit https://lnkd.in/exzxTSc? ??
