US ASC market expected to reach $60 billion by 2030 ?? Compounded 6% growth, along with better patient outcomes, advances in anesthesia, physician ownership, and payors not having to pay hospital rates...... that number actually seems a little low ?? You'd think CMS would realize this and adjust their rates accordingly...... ????♂? #asc #ambulatorysurgerycenters #surgerycenters #outpatientsurgery #outpatient #surgerycenter #growth

I wish this post was an April Fools joke. It’s not. We all know that the healthcare system and health insurance are broken. This post by Eric Bricker, MD is an example of the “system” worrying about how to set themselves up to get more from either the Government or Insurance companies. If insurance didn’t exist, how would you set-up your membership system to provide a valuable, affordable, transparent product for your patients? One with a known cost for all procedures? 100% transparent. If you need “x”, it will cost “y”. Government healthcare and insurance plans have a lot of flaws. No one will argue that they don’t. This post is a reminder that in some cases, your hospital systems and the doctors that run them are just as flawed. We need our doctors and hospitals to find a solution to our healthcare problem. The Government and health insurance won’t get it done. Remember, health insurance was invented by doctors. When their hospital services started getting expensive, they invented Blue Cross. A membership with a monthly affordable fee to spread out the costs among a community and provide enough revenue to support newer more expensive equipment and procedures. Since that time, several Government programs and policies combined with health insurance risk management have created an “us” against “them” mentality that completely forgets about the patient and the initial goal to create affordable quality care. What’s caught my attention from this post is that there’s no discussion of how to create a better product or better patient experience to justify getting paid more. The strategy is only about loopholes to milk more profits from a status quo patient experience (or worse). There’s no incentive for the Government or Insurance companies to even care. The only one negatively impacted is the patient. I’m still optimistic that a solution will come from doctors and hospitals that remember why they created health insurance in the first place. They are uniquely positioned to fix the problem. They invented health insurance, they provide and set the prices on the services we get and many of them own their own health insurance companies. I’m confident that they can provide a quality product that people can afford. A product that has enough value to be worth paying for. A product with a price tag like everything else we buy. Can we start by telling a patient, “I recommend this procedure. Your insurance will cover, “x” and you will be responsible for “y”.” Can we stop blaming Medicare and Medicaid and insurance companies? Can we remember that medical debt is harmful both physically and mentally? Can we remember, first do no harm?
