So, I went to my local pharmacy today to pick up my insulin. As a T1 diabetic, I very much need it. This medication has been 'locked', meaning the pharmacy cannot even order it as there is such a shortage of it in the UK. Which means I have 3 months worth of my medication and they hope they can get some in by then, but cannot be sure. The poor assistant was so apologetic (not her fault) and looked exhausted by having similar conversations with all patients (I saw and heard it with the 5 people before me). When I asked why there was a shortage, she said that medication is in short supply due to the border changes at our ports. Supply just simply isn't meeting demands. I am on an insulin pump that only takes humalog (the type of insulin I am prescribed) and that keeps me functioning, able to work, able to see family and friends and - to put it frankly - it keeps me alive. So when people say Brexit was good and we will see the benefits soon, I say: the people you love, the people you work with, the people that work hard to help you are suffering for it now. A reminder of some helpful tips: 1) You don't ONLY have to visit the GP to get your blood pressure checked, you can check it at most local pharmacies, or Tesco pharmacy, or better still have a machine to test your blood pressure at home. 2) It takes no more than 40 seconds (yes not even a minute!) so we know you can find some time this month! 3) Your optimal blood pressure is 120/80, by testing more often you get to know your 'norm'.
