Upper extremity Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training in baseball pitchers has been shown to be beneficial in improving shoulder stability. 1. Rotator cuff musculature provides essential static and dynamic stability to the shoulder. 2. In this study, 8 weeks of upper extremity BFR training resulted in increased shoulder lean mass and muscular endurance in division IA collegiate pitchers. 3. I'm celebrating my first ride since having shoulder surgery. A 35km commute. Effortlessly due to a good surgeon, structured therapy and the Gravaa Kinetic Air Pressure System Usually I'd commute on my roadbike, but given the ability to change tyre pressure while riding my curiosity won. I opted for one of the company gravelbikes and held a 100% not scientific experiment. This morning I cruised out of town on 'my standard' 1.8 bar in the front and 2.0 bar in the back. On a long paved cyclepath I activated the internal pump. First I inflated to 2.4 and 2.6 bar in about 500 meters. Curious to if I'd perceive more or less effort I inflated to 3.0 and 3.2 bar, which felt more efficient. In the last part I saw and rode some wet gravel, for which I dropped the tyre pressure to a comfortable 1.4 and 1.6 within two seconds. For the last kilometers trough Eindhoven I back to 2.4 and 2.6. Was this a race? No Did I enjoy the ride? Yes Did I ride better with Gravaa? I don't own a powermeter, but it felt like that. If I were to get a powermeter, and look to exchange it easily. Did you know glenoid shape may play a role in SLAP tears requiring surgery? In a study by Sweitzer et al., pitchers with a history of SLAP repair did NOT have side-to-side differences in glenoid version. Uninjured pitchers had greater retroversion on the throwing side. Tommy John surgery is one of the most common, if not the most common, injuries in baseball, particularly among pitchers. It occurs when the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in the elbow is torn due to the repetitive strain of throwing. The surgery involves replacing the damaged ligament with a tendon from another part of the body. What does it mean to make progress? Ran the Halloween Howler 50km a few days ago. Relatively flat, super dusty, always hot course. Last year - 5hrs 12mins This year - 5hrs 12mins Face value you could argue that not only have I not made progress, but gone backwards. I mean did you even train this year?? What have you been doing? Context matters. I came into the race this year off the back of 3 months (Jun-Jul-Aug) being sidelined post knee surgery and then having only run my first race back (100km) a few weeks prior. The map is not the territory. The numbers are not the whole story. Step back and look for context, and then appreciate the story that is really being told.
