To the marketing teams of brokers and carriers: stop posting pictures of your golf outings where there is not one single woman in attendance. When you post those, they get sent to me. Dozens of times. From people making fun of, or angry at, the tone deafness. “But women don’t like to golf!” Yes they do. And if they don’t? That’s your clue that a golf event isn’t what you should be hosting. Individually, do what you need to in order to win business: golf, wine taste, fire weapons, take your client to the theatre. My AXA XL underwriter took me to Tankfest. The CEO of Velocity Risk once adopted a llama in the Hard Market’s name. But when it comes to team/office/company sponsored events, stop blowing the T&E budget on events that only cater to men. It just makes this industry look like exactly what everyone thinks we are. …And if you insist on doing this, stop putting pictures of it on LinkedIn. Think about how it might look to young people exploring potential career prospects to see the same picture of the same 4 Peter Millar polos over and over. Not particularly inspiring. We don’t want to hear about how inclusive you think you are, only to see you publicly spending $50k entertaining only one type of person.

If you're following our stories, you might think we've gone on a quest for the best scone of the west, but truth is, we're travelling all around Southern Queensland Country to talk about branding. The scones have been a pleasant surprise though! So far, we've run 7 focus groups and talked to more people than we have all year. Aside from learning lots about the destination, what we've really learned is that there's never a bad time to get aligned on who your customers are and why they visit you. To all my fellow golf lovers, how amazing is this tee view ?? This is La Hacienda in Spain, if you have a chance to play it, it’s definitely worth it! Why do I show posts like this 1) It builds my personal brand. Allows other people to know a bit more about me outside of work. 2) Builds trust, the more we know about someone. We become familiar, we trust them. Most large business deals are done over things that aren’t work. A big dinner, a night out, a round of golf. We like to know more about the people we deal business with. 3) It’s more engaging - peope moan and say the term “it’s not Facebook” personal posts always perform the best. It’s real, it’s personal. We are all human, we can’t help but be fascinating with things that have similar interest to ourselves. 4) It starts more conversations! Yes I get conversations when I talk about social selling. But it’s hard to engage with someone who talks business. We don’t want them thinking we are interested, so some people don’t interact because of it. When I post personal stuff whether it’s about golf, a run I went on, some of the leadership experiences I have, I get so many conversations with people I’ve never spoken with. Guess what, their senior leader and my target audience. So when you go to write your next post. And overthink and doubt yourself when you think you shouldn’t add something more personal. Don’t listen to it. If you find a way of adding regular posts like this in, trust me. You’ll build a way better engaged audience. What’s your thoughts on personal posts?

I lost today Today Tavo Estrada and I had the opportunity to compete in our first DECA competition which happened to be Collegiate State. We did a Team Event in Entertainment Marketing, and both did solo events. Tavo Estrada did Marketing Management, and I did Sales Management. First let me give credit to my partner for killing it in his event. Winning 2nd place to Taegen Ure (Who is an absolute legend). In our team event we stepped on the podium at 3rd, taking backseat to two great teams also from USU (Congratulations to them they are more than qualified), and my individual event? An underwhelming 4th. I'm a competitor at heart and don't like to lose. Both placements were somewhat of a disappointment. I thought of excuses, was angry at some judges, went over my presentations in my head to see what I possibly missed. I thought there was no way I could have had such a lackluster result. But guess what? Sometimes you just get beat. I needed to realize this is my first time competing in these events. First time in DECA, and first time in any sort of Sales event. This post isn't meant to diminish the performance of my competitors, they have worked hard and I'm glad to compete against skilled business people. I still know I'm better at these fields than the placements show. I have to pivot, adjust, and learn. We still qualified for nationals in our events so we still have another chance to put it on the line. Like Ludacris once said: "Can't never count me out, yall better count me in" See you at nationals
