This month's Rural Justice Collaborative Innovation Site spotlight features the Rural Attorney Recruitment Program in South Dakota. The Rural Attorney Recruitment Program recruits qualified attorneys to practice for five years in rural counties where older attorneys are retiring and there is an absence of individuals to provide legal services. The program connects eligible rural counties and legal employers to attorneys interested in rural practice. Qualified attorneys agree to practice full-time in the county for at least five years and receive incentive payments equal to 90% of the University of South Dakota School of Law’s tuition costs. During those five years, the goal is to ensure the attorney becomes vested in his/her community, increasing the likelihood that the attorney will remain in the rural community after the five years are expired. The stipends provide financial stability as new attorneys establish themselves in the community and address the genuine concern of law school debt. The State Bar, the participating rural county, and the Unified Judicial System split the cost of the incentive payment.

Evictions don’t just take away homes—they disrupt lives, education, and financial stability. Greenville County’s 20% eviction filing rate—250% higher than the national average—reflects the widening gap between incomes and housing costs, leaving families vulnerable. At SCLS, we’re on the front lines, helping tenants fight for their rights. Our Director of Litigation, Mark Fessler, contributed to a new report shedding light on the struggles tenants face, from legal barriers to lasting consequences like housing ineligibility. In 2023, we provided legal assistance to nearly 2,000 South Carolinians facing eviction, ensuring they had the support they needed during a difficult time. These efforts are part of our commitment to housing justice and keeping families secure in their homes. Read the report at evictioningvlcounty.org

Amendment 80 is a significant move towards taking tax dollars from public schools and using them for private schools. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to undermine public education and is a calculated first step in a nationwide effort to introduce voucher programs in every state. Colorado can’t afford even one step down the vouchers path, Vote No on Amendment 80. See https://lnkd.in/gw7KWy8i for more No on 80 resources. Amendment 80 is the first step toward realizing a national plot to divert public money to private school voucher programs, reduce federal education funding and eliminate civil rights protections for America’s children.

https://lnkd.in/d6mu3yZ6 Position and money still rules. The ordinary person in the street can just sigh and whistle away any idea of really changing things to help improve their lives. Unless the people start organising and even taking up these positions in local and central government the one way traffic will continue infinitem. The segregated school system has a lot to answer for the rich who can access education establishments that have direct connections to the higher echelons of society and have a distinct advantage over the rest. I think all that is needed is a curriculum similar in state schools that is enjoyed by the private sector, then the real levelling up can really begin.

To everyone in Delaware…when I worked in Public Relations at DelDOT, I took calls. Callers complaining that Delaware roads were not as cleared of snow as roads in Maryland or Pennsylvania. Here’s why… DelDOT is responsible for roughly 90% of Delaware’s roads. Our three counties do NOTHING on roads…no construction, no repairs, no snow removal. In other states, the ratio is different. Those state transportation agencies are responsible for 10-15% of roads. Counties and municipalities handle the bulk of the remainder, including snow removal. Thus, there are more government agencies working on roads in other states. You could have this in Delaware too…counties doing road work and snow removal. But to get it, you’ll pay tax rates like our friends in Maryland and Pennsylvania pay. The counties pretty much do nothing, letting the state pay the bills. Only New Castle County offers police protection. Kent and Sussex pay token amounts to the Delaware State Police - token amounts compared to what it would cost for county police…and your higher tax rates. So cut DelDOT some slack when it snows. They’re doing their own work and everyone else’s.

??????????’?? ????????-???????????? ?????????????????????? ????????????: ?????????? ?????????? ?????? ?? ?????????????????? ???? ?? ???????? ???????? President Biden decided to celebrate Christmas Eve not with cookies and cocoa, but by signing a record-breaking 50 bills into law, proving that even lame ducks can quack up a storm. Among the highlights: Paris Hilton’s legislation to protect teens in residential treatment facilities (because who better to lead a crusade for teen safety than someone once branded as the queen of reality drama?), a crackdown on corrupt Congress members keeping pensions (looking at you, Bob Menendez), and mandatory anti-hazing measures for colleges (finally addressing America’s most awkward form of bonding). Also, in case you were wondering, the bald eagle is now officially the national bird, because apparently, 248 years of unofficial status wasn’t patriotic enough. In a true holiday twist, Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 inmates, leaving everyone to debate whether clemency was a gift of mercy or coal for public safety concerns. ?????????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????? ?????? ???????????? ???????????????????? Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Spanish King Felipe VI delivered his annual Christmas Eve speech, touching on topics like the devastating Valencia floods, skyrocketing rents, and immigration tensions. Ever the diplomat, Felipe urged calm and cooperation, proving once again that royalty's main job is to sound wise while sidestepping actual responsibility. As Spain's young citizens navigate high unemployment and higher rent, one can only hope their landlords were too busy binging “The Crown” to catch this polite nudge towards affordable housing reform. --- Written by AI, because when the real world starts resembling satire, we’re here to ensure it stays absurd. https://lnkd.in/grbQTaNk

With a historic 26 measures on Denver's November 2024 ballot, casting an educated vote has never been so important. The Downtown Denver Partnership recently released our Ballot Guide that outlines the seven positions we've taken on measures this election cycle and provides overviews of every question that Denverites will decide on this November. One of our key priorities is reflected on the ballot. Measure 6A asks those who own, lease, or rent property within Union Stations and Market Station in downtown to approve the renewal and expansion of the Downtown Denver Development Authority (DDDA). The DDDA is critical to ensuring our city’s growth and revitalization. The time is now to renew this important tool for Downtown Denver. We can create a future where everyone benefits through catalytic projects like parks and public spaces, housing options, neighborhood and family amenities, and so much more. If you’re eligible to vote on 6A, we hope you’ll join us in supporting the measure and, if it’s not on your ballot, please help us encourage eligible electors to help us pass this measure that is critical to the future of downtown.
