Singapore Airlines gifted Lawrence Wong the perfect present on 15 May - the day the island state installed its fourth prime minister - when the flag carrier announced a spectacular net profit of SGD2.7 billion (on revenue of SGD19 billion) for its financial year ending 31 March. While SIA is used to posting big profits since its inception in 1972, this sum is special following several years of suffering during Covid-19 and underscores the airline's continued ability to raise its game. SIA also announced a very generous eight-month bonus for its staff and recommended a final dividend of 38 cents/share, bringing the total payout to 48 cents/share. This is 10 cents higher compared to what it paid out in the last FY. The forecast for the current FY2024-25 remains robust although SIA is unlikely to equal this latest performance as 2H24 may, in our opinion, bring about conditions that could cause further discord amongst nations, resulting in a very unstable world. Three months ago, under the guidance of Professor Antonios Georgopoulos from University of Patras, I completed my final semester project on Business Resumption Planning in the Greek Aviation Industry, with a case study focusing on Aegean Airlines' acquisition of Olympic Airways My research explored: The strategic and operational challenges of the acquisition. Business continuity strategies that ensured resilience during periods of market volatility. Key lessons on crisis management and the lasting impact on the aviation sector in Greece. This project gave me valuable insights into the resilience and adaptability needed in the aviation sector, particularly in times of change. As the industry continues to evolve, the principles learned remain highly relevant. Excited to share more from this experience and apply it to future challenges!
