Technical Rescue Thursday: Both Arizona mountain rescue teams I have been a member of are also responsible for cave and mine rescue. There are A LOT of mines in Arizona, working by and abandoned. Most individuals who join mountain rescue have a wilderness and backcountry pedigree, and even if they don’t have specific cave experience, they are comfortable in them. Mines are a whole different ball game. Mines give all of us the willies. Why? * Caves are for the most part inherently stable, being formed naturally. Mines are not. They are formed where the minerals being extracted are, and that’s where the shafts are sunk. Mine collapses are a major source of death and injury in the profession. * Most cave rescues involve not working mines (most large mines have their own internal rescue teams) but people exploring abandoned mines. Even if once stable, time can and often will lead to the deterioration of the supports making them even more dangerous. * Because of this artificial high directionals are a MUST. Great attention is taken to prevent the ropes, the equipment, the rescuer, and ultimately the patient from touching the sidewalls. Even a small disturbance can lead to catastrophic collapse. * Bad/toxic air is a constant risk. While SCBA is generally out of the skill set of mountain rescue, continuous air monitoring is a must. - If you come across an abandoned mine, STAY OUT - There are numerous unregistered ‘wildcat’ mines throughout the American Southwest, and every year or two someone inadvertently steps on a wood plank covering one up and plunges through. DARE TO DREAM Our dreams come to us at night interrupting our sleep or during the day daring us to grow. In Midland TX, we Dare to Dream of being at the top of the oil and gas industry where everyone feels its success rain down. The oilfield is the driving force of Midland’s ideas, imagination, and desires. Yearning for fruition in the form of a booming economy with successful citizens. The oil derrick appears almost like a ladder reaching high up to the sky allowing all to climb towards success. In this image, dreams are not mere idealizations, but instead life realities. A man can stand proud knowing he is working hard to support his family which in turn furthers their ability to imagine.
