The N22?Macroom?Bypass project?features?the construction of a 22km dual carriageway,?constructed?offline of the existing N22. The project has 130 structures including river crossings, road?underbridges, culverting and underpasses. Asset International Structures Ltd?secured 29?asset?VSoL?wall structures totalling?approximately?10,000sqm of cross panel, along with?12?asset?BEBO arch culverts with precast head and wing walls.? ? Exploring a Flood Control Infrastructure Project Here’s a glimpse into a fascinating flood control project captured from a drone. The footage shows 5-meter-long steel sheet piles being installed almost entirely into the ground using an excavator and a vibratory hammer along the riverbank and the base of the levee. This setup is likely designed to counteract the piping effect and extend the seepage path of water, thereby slowing down its filtration rate. Role of Steel Sheet Piles in Flood Control Projects: - Preventing Piping: Steel sheet piles create a barrier that prevents soil particles from being carried away by water flow, effectively stopping the piping effect which can lead to levee failure. - Seepage Control: By driving sheet piles deep into the ground, the seepage path is extended, reducing the speed at which water can filter through the soil. This helps in maintaining the structural integrity of levees and embankments. - Structural Support: These piles provide additional structural support to levees, making them more resistant to the forces exerted by floodwaters. - Durability: Steel sheet piles are highly durable and can withstand harsh environmental conditions, ensuring long-term protection for flood-prone areas. In the early 1950s, the United States government initiated the construction of a series of concrete flood walls for flood prevention. These structures were designed with significant durability and reinforcement. Typically, the concrete used in these flood walls was 2 to 3 feet thick and heavily reinforced with steel to ensure robustness and longevity. The following data set pertains to one such flood wall, offering insights into its construction and structural integrity. The data set below was collected using the new NX15 accessory antenna for Flex NX?, which is specifically designed for deeper concrete applications. This data set, collected horizontally, provides detailed insights into the vertical reinforcement within the flood retaining wall. The data set spans approximately 128 feet in length. Out of curiosity, ran a drainage catchment area analysis in one of the sections of Pari Road in Port Moresby, where I am currently living. After determining the catchment area (26.311 hectares) using Google Earth Pro and QGIS softwares and assuming for a 100 year storm period with a rainfall intensity of 150mm/hr for the worst case scenario, at least two 900mm diameter culvert size would suffice. Accurately determining the culvert sizes from correct formulation of catchment area and other related factors would greatly assist in effectively managing the ongoing drainage issues in the city.
