Did you know that almost 20 US Veterans commit suicide daily? Uplifiting, right? I had a powerful conversation yesterday with an organization that serves veterans, and, wow, it was striking how closely their requests align with what I hear from healthcare groups. Veterans are looking for a deep understanding of their specific experiences, tailored support when and where it's needed, and innovative solutions that only an insider could provide. But, again, the difficulty in navigating complex healthcare systems and a society built for the masses becomes clear. Solutions for everyday living, travel and adaptive sports, and simply providing the space for community connections for people, their families and their caregivers continue to top the list. I'm excited to help bridge that gap by ideating and creating solutions that impact folks so clearly in need. Many Veterans aren't too familiar with the benefits the VA offers to caregivers, we found in a recent survey of Veterans and non-Veterans about VA benefits. It's also clear that there are opportunities to help Veterans learn more about the assistance offered to Veterans exposed to toxic substances during their service time, and that while there is general alignment between Veterans and non-Veterans about the key priorities for the VA, there are different perceptions about the level of need for various services. https://lnkd.in/e-R3qFX3

Veteran and military caregivers spend an average $11,500 of personal income each year on out-of-pocket expenses related to supporting their loved ones, 150% more than other family caregivers in the U.S., according to new data from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. More than 6.5 million veterans and military caregivers provide $14 billion in unpaid labor caring for their service members each year, even as the Department of Veterans Affairs offers extensive services for caregivers. In this episode, Nancy and I delve into the current landscape of caregiving in the United States. With an aging population and evolving healthcare needs, the role of caregivers has never been more critical. We explore the challenges faced by caregivers, from financial strain to emotional exhaustion, and discuss the impact on both caregivers and those receiving care. Join us as we navigate the complex world of caregiving in America, uncovering the stories, struggles, and triumphs of those on the front lines of care.

There are on average more than 17 veteran suicides per day in the United States. This #SuicidePreventionMonth, we want to remind veterans that help is available. Veterans experiencing a suicidal crisis can receive emergency mental health care at a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or non-VA facility – at no cost to the veteran – thanks to the Veterans Comprehensive Prevention, Access to Care, and Treatment (COMPACT) Act of 2020. Since January 2023, Tria Federal’s Legislative Support team has played a key role in helping VHA’s Revenue Operations (RO) program office comply with the intent of the COMPACT Act. “Our aim is to ensure that these sections of legislation, which are intended to ease the financial burden for veterans in crisis, can be properly operationalized by RO so that their staff can efficiently cancel veterans’ copays,” said Madeline Cohen, a Tria consultant. Caregivers of veterans spend > 1.5x more on out-of-pocket costs than other caregivers. On #VeteransDay, let’s honor our servicemen & women AND those who care for them by helping them find the support they need. An AARP report found: ?? Family caregivers of veterans spend $11,500 of their personal income on out-of-pocket costs related to caregiving each year. ?? 43% of caregivers experienced at least one financial setback such as having to take on more debt or dip into personal savings. ?????? The VA offers support to caregivers of veterans enrolled in VA healthcare, but only 34% of veterans have used their VA earned benefits.
