For my final assignment for the first semester, I have to create a survey and collect data that I can put together, graph, and more. I am using this assignment to create a social experiment that will tell me how people feel about potential solutions to ending homelessness. Everything I have learned here? There has rarely been more federal capital made available to cities and counties across the US, yet our experience at Camber Collective tells us that the world of federal funding often feels impenetrable to local decision-makers. The result? Significant resource continues to be left on the table, as potential recipients are lost across each stage of the user continuum (Funding Availability > Eligibility > Awareness > Application > Receipt > Usage). In parallel, we also see a governance challenge: many under-resourced localities don't enjoy the bandwidth required to lead the data collection and analysis processes required to precisely diagnose the disparities they seek to redress, and to then marry those disparities up with relevant federal funding streams. That's why I'm so pleased to see the National League of Cities release its Federal Grant Equity Dashboard. This tool enables disinvested localities to connect with critical resources and guidance to help local governments make data-informed decisions about various priorities and policies that can address disparities in their communities. Using a data-driven approach to improve family outcomes, the tool helps cities measure the vulnerability of each census track within a community focusing on priority issues such as housing, transportation, and employment. The city then receives a data assessment that can inform 2 -3 funding priorities for federal applications around basic human needs and community well-being, as well as be used as a grant narrative starting point. I'd invite all local decision-makers to visit the tool. In due course, Camber Collective will also release complementary data on the relative size of capital flowing from federal government and philanthropic institutions to support each of the 28 life experiences most proven to advance lifetime income -- which we call the Mobility Experiences (see https://lnkd.in/gpeybDPr). These two tools, together, will enable local decision-makers to track not only what funding is available and relevant to them, but also to assess how far federal funding as a whole is or is not enabling people to access economic mobility via increased lifetime income.

Systems Practice is a way to make sense of complex environments and uncover the dynamics that have the greatest potential for impact. Here we highlight the Rural Opportunity Institute's work done in the rural, majority-black community of Edgecombe County, NC to understand their system, analyze it to find points of leverage, and create pilots. Access the map here: https://lnkd.in/dryqwWvF The cycles they identified around trauma really resonate - for example, how a high ACE score (high childhood trauma) in the community decreases resilience, the “Boot Strap” Trap, Generational Poverty, or how people using negative coping behaviors to overcome trauma are the ones who need the most help but become the most isolated. One of their community members shared, "I’m watching my grandson’s face go through this map," explaining that she could track her grandson’s difficulties in the school system on the systems map. ?? Collecting quality data can help communities make sure their housing systems aren’t perpetuating racial disparities. According to ORS Impact’s 2023 research, about 75% of Built For Zero communities surveyed have already begun to take specific action toward countering racial disparities in housing outcomes. “All of our data is broken out by race and ethnicity, but also equitable housing outcomes,” shared the leader of one Built For Zero community. “So, everything — any housing outcomes, programs in the shelter, our own Homeless to Housing — everything is broken out to make sure that nothing is skewing in (a biased) direction.”" Learn more: https://bit.ly/4bwTysH

?? Empty Desks: The Future of Greater Boston’s School Enrollment ?? Peter Ciurczak’s recent “Empty Desks” trilogy with Boston Indicators delves into #BostonPublicSchools' troubling enrollment trends. In his final installment of the series, Ciurczak examines the impact of shifting trends in birthrates, housing costs, and immigration patterns on Inner Core Communities and their school enrollment numbers. While numbers are falling in #Boston, they are rising in other communities, including wealthier suburbs and towns with increasing immigrant populations. ?? Most alarming of Ciurczak’s discoveries, K-2 enrollment has seen a significant drop across the region, suggesting an oncoming decline in overall school enrollment in Boston and surrounding municipalities. ??
