We need a Golden Rule Reckoning for B2B. During my very first SiriusDecisions Summit presentation I asked the 150 or so people in attendance two questions: ? Do you have a BDR team that calls prospects? -- almost everyone raises their hand because that's why they are at my presentation. ? Do you ever -- yourself -- respond to BDR calls? -- 10, maybe 15 people raise their hands. I've done other polls on LinkedIn asking similar questions, and the answer is always the same. We marketers simply do not respond to the kinds of things we expect, and base our annual plans on, other people doing. You could say that we are slightly more jaded than many B2B buyers - but more jaded than IT people, CFOs, etc? I sort of doubt it. And yet, we just go on doing the same things to others that we do not want done to us and which just don't work to engage us. Our buyers in B2B are not some strange animal from another planet. We have met the buyer, and they are us! I propose the Golden Rule Litmus test for B2B Marketing: Would I respond to this kind of tactic? Would this tactic improve how I think of my brand? If the answer is no to either, keep working to develop better ideas. We're all under pressure to come up with things to do that look like the right activities, but the truth is most of them don't work.
