Nice to have a lengthy chat with Huon Hooke about this & share some of my thoughts wearing my old Organisational Psychologist hat! People often say “women make better winemakers.” It’s just plain wrong - it’s simply not backed up by any substantial evidence. What statements like this do is take attention off the the actual evidence that we do have. Which is that women simply have to work a whole lot harder (and often sacrifice more) to get into those head winemaking positions in the first place - and that’s because of widespread biases that exist in their hiring and career promotion. If you are in the Australian wine industry and your role involves hiring or promotion, and you’ve never had any kind of unconscious bias training then you are unknowingly perpetuating the problem in limiting the diversity of our workforce (gender or otherwise). In my opinion, things will continue to move at at snail’s pace in our industry unless widespread recruitment and unconscious bias training is implemented immediately. We are decades behind on this.
Women have never been better represented among the ranks of winemakers than they are today, and we believe this is especially so among the best wineries. #AustralianWomeninWine #CullenWines #CurtinUniversity #DavidHook #DrJeremyGalbreath #FionaDonald #GwynOlsen #HenschkeWines #HuonHooke #JaneThomsonOAM #SarahCrowe #SeppeltsfieldWines #TheFabulousLadiesWineSociety #TopWineriesofAustralia2024 #VanyaCullen #WineAustralia #WineIndustryDirectory #WomenInWine #YarraYering #WinePeople

it is quiet easy to argue that role of women in wine has a long road to hoe, despite the fact we have seen a number of positive changes and women in the industry taking greater charge of their destiny. A fascinating piece by Mary- Thèrèse Blair really opened my eyes to just how little has changed over the last 120 years or so. It appears that the first women recognised as a winemaker was a women named Hannah Weinberger, she and her husband John owned a winery in the Napa Valley in the 19th century. Her husband was shot and she carried on for nearly 40 years running the winery largely unassisted until Prohibition saw the end of her wine making days. We appreciate that woman over time have been making wine for many years but this is one of the few documented cases. Let me share some of the statistics that were uncovered: * Wine is the preferred drink of 52% of woman. * Women make more than 59% of all wine buying decisions. * 20% of winemakers globally are women. * The Master of Wine program has 418 members only 149 are women. * The Court of Master Sommeliers have only 17% of their members are women. * In Champagne less that 10% of women have achieved the prestigious position of Chef de Caves. There is so much space for improvement not only the statistical areas cited but across the entire industry. its interesting when we start to see greater equity in the industry one hopes that this is not a story that has to be told but a story that relates one of greater balance and recognition. Happy Easter one and all (Source Oh Mother Where Art Thou? by Mary-Thèrese Blair Cuisine Issue 122 March 2024)
