Friendly Reminder: Latin American / Hispanic heritage month starts on Sept 15. Out of courtesy, you should have already booked your speakers/consultants for whatever celebration your organization, company, school, etc. plans to do. If you haven't done so already, get to that this week. And remember not to tokenize! 1. consult with actual members of the community as you plan events and social media posts 2. remember that Latin America is diverse and is comprised of various countries with their own unique cultures. Please don't just center Mexico. 3. Make space for Afro-Latinx members to feel seen and for Portuguese and Indigenous dialects to feel celebrated. Latin Americans come in all colors and don't all speak Spanish. These are just three simple suggestions. Do your research. And if you need a consultant, reach out!

National Hispanic Heritage Month 2024 in United States began yesterday, September 15 and ends on October 15 Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Not all Hispanic and Latinos share the same background, and assuming so can lead to misunderstandings. While there are common threads, each community has its own unique history, traditions, and customs. For instance: ?????Language: Spanish may be widely spoken, but there are significant populations fluent in Portuguese, and indigenous languages. Moreover, variations in accents and dialects abound within Spanish-speaking communities. ???????Cuisine: Hispanic and Latino cuisine is a delicious blend of indigenous, African, European, and Asian influences. However, the specific dishes and flavors vary greatly across regions and countries. ??????Religion: While Catholicism is often predominant, Hispanic and Latino communities also practice a diverse range of faiths including Protestantism, Judaism, and indigenous spiritual beliefs. Each of these adds a unique dimension to the cultural fabric of these communities. Assuming a uniform background overlooks this rich tapestry of diversity, undermining the unique identities and experiences within Hispanic/Latino communities. COMMON CHALLENGES LATINOS ENCOUNTER WHEN FILLING OUT FORMS Latinos constitute a cultural group rather than a racial category. In Latin American countries, cultural diversity tends to diminish quickly, a phenomenon that can be traced back to the edict of Queen Isabella I of Castile. She decreed that Spaniards should intermix with the local populations upon conquering new lands, leading to a significant reduction in diversity within three generations—a contrast to what is observed in countries like Canada or the United States. In countries where there was intermixing without extinction (unlike in Canada and the United States), Latin America is by far more advanced. Comparing European colonies in Africa or Belize with any Latin American country shows a marked difference in development.
