This article in today's East Anglian Daily Times demonstrates the absolute determination of National Grid, the #UKGovernment and the power companies to completely ignore local concerns or consider #betteroptions. The government is happy to consider spending ￡4billion on #cabletransmission to take electricity from Scotland to the north of England, but not ￡800 million which is the cost estimate to do the same for Norwich to Tilbury. That's 80% lower cost than the Scottish plan, in an area of vital highly productive agricultural land (East Anglia produces 25%?of the UK's cereal crops & more than 50% of England's entire sugar beet crop), with communities depending on tourism as a key part of the economic mix. There is also the issue of destruction of #biodiversity and the habitats of a plethora of rare and #protectedspecies which the route will result in, as it cuts directly across the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Shockingly, the UK is one of the most #naturedepleted countries in the world, with one in six species at risk of extinction according to the #2023stateofnature report produced by a collaboration of environmental NGOs, academic institutions and government agencies, including Natural England. These kinds of funding streams are critical for rural communities to continue to prosper. Although these projects specifically look at rural communities who are transitioning from traditional power production to clean power, they still promote growth, diversification, equity and resilience; All things we could all use.

As part of Labour’s “Great Grid Upgrade”, Mr Miliband intends to enhance our power network by installing thousands of pylons throughout various counties, including Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk. ?? Council leaders from affected communities have criticised the plans for the loss of agricultural land and visual impact on rural areas, which could affect tourism. Demonstrating the extent of disdain towards Mr Miliband’s plans, one Lincolnshire councillor labelled the pylons "horrible monoliths that belong to a past industrial age". ?? ?? ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? ????????????????????? Council’s have called for community compensation of “hundreds of millions of pounds” if the pylons are pushed through. A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson recently stated that “where communities live near clean energy infrastructure, they should benefit directly from it”. Whilst greater clarity is needed, perhaps further common ground can be found to prevent a likely lengthy battle between the Government and local authorities, which could define Mr Miliband’s time as Energy Secretary. The U.S. government is allocating $7.3 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act to fund clean energy projects led by rural electric cooperatives. The initiative aims to reduce energy costs and improve reliability for rural Americans while helping to avoid over 43 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. "One in five rural Americans will benefit from these clean energy investments," says U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Thomas Vilsack.
