Engagement. Farmer. Director. Transitions. Thinker. Coach. Capability Builder.

So much of our work at the moment, is working with communities and clients convening, listening, connecting dots and trying to shine a light on local solutions and pathways forward for the transition that is positive for regional, rural and remote people and place. It’s a long game. Cracking article ??

Important article today on the "power shift" needed in the #energytransition by James Button, highlighting the need for regional #communities to have a much bigger stake and say. It features great local stories and voices - and includes Andrew Dyer, Dr Helen Haines and Fiona McKenzie "calling for a radical change of approach to keep the transition on track". https://lnkd.in/gjGQ4WUk

Empowering People & Facilitating Engaged Outcomes in Rural Australia

Unfortunately I can’t read the article but will chase it up today. This ‘power shift’ is critical and also complex! The Renewable Energy code is being developed in Qld at the moment with mandatory and better practice elements aimed at providing guidance and boundaries for developers and to put some accountability power into the hands of individuals and communities. (We have examples of companies who already do genuine engagement and are focused on long term shared benefit and legacy… alongside some nightmares!)This won’t be enough though… the communities that are being proactive (Western Downs Regional Council, Hay, Wimmera Wimmera Southern Mallee Development to name a few) have leaders (formal and informal) who have stepped up and initiated and collaborated and sought the expertise to bring their communities together and along… My experience in communities in the last few weeks in REZ’s in QLD range from people not knowing what it is, through to those who think they can ‘stop it going ahead’ through to those who have jumped on the opportunity (at the price of their community relationships in several cases)…. Much work to be done if we want our regional rural and remote communities to benefit and thrive from the transition!
