Here are some key facts to consider this Breast Cancer Awareness Month: ?????? Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally, affecting millions each year. ?? Early detection saves lives. Regular mammograms, clinical exams, and self-exams are crucial in identifying breast cancer at its most treatable stage. ??? African American women under 50 are more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive forms of breast cancer. Awareness of risk factors and family history is essential for prevention and early intervention. ?? 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Advances in research, treatment, and education are key to reducing this number—and with collective effort, we’re moving closer to a cure. https://lnkd.in/g3eDWsVm As I lace up my shoes and hit the pavement, each step feels purposeful, carrying the weight of the children and families fighting against childhood cancer. With every breath, I'm reminded of the bigger reason driving me forward the kids and their families who need our support. Training to cross that finish line on race day isn't just about personal achievement; it's about reaching that finish line together because, with your help, we can make a difference in the lives of those battling this disease. Here's something worth knowing: Families at St. Jude never receive a bill. Treatment, travel, housing, food none of it comes with a financial burden. Why? Because when a child is fighting for their life, their family should only have to focus on being there, holding onto hope and love. But here's the reality check: Childhood cancer still takes too many lives. In the U.S. alone, about 15,590 children under 19 years old are diagnosed with cancer each year. And despite improvements in survival rates, around 1,790 children still lose their lives to cancer annually in the U.S. However, there's hope shining through the darkness. Thanks to groundbreaking research and treatment at St. Jude, survival rates have soared from 20% to over 80% in just 50 years. Every day, dedicated researchers are making progress, getting us closer to a future where no child has to endure the pain of cancer. But there's more work to do. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer. And every breakthrough they achieve is shared freely, giving hope to countless others. Your donation isn't just a number; it's a lifeline. This is my ninth year participating in the annual Great Cycle Challenge to raise money to fight children’s cancer. Cancer in children is different from cancers that develop later in adults. As a result, the side effects of typical adult cancer treatments cause more harm to children because children’s bodies are still growing and developing. One in five children diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. will not survive, and for those who do, by the age of fifty, more than 99% of survivors had a chronic health problem, and 96% have experienced a severe or life-threatening condition. Unfortunately, funding for childhood cancer is less than 10 percent of the dollars the federal government makes available for research into adult cancers which is why raising funds is so important. One in four families lose more than 40% of their annual household income because of childhood cancer treatment-related work disruption, while one in three families face other work disruptions such as having to quit or change jobs.
