Yes and thank goodness for many reasons as independent film and television content allows for more freedom of expression and creativity. Which has been lacking in the past 5 years to a decade or so in particular when there was a solitary investment source that many said “why not it can’t be that bad..” only to find there was not only tons of creative neutering as well as aggressive financial and business practices in order to control what content was made by buying the rights to projects only to ensure they were not produced. For a while there, distributors and investors from other parts of the globe were limiting the subject matter of the content we were seeing in our own country based on their own censorship beliefs and laws. It almost got to the point of indoctrination of youth in our society due to the selective production and high volume of content/subject matter. As when a narrow band of ideas is sprayed in an isolated high output stream at the viewer the subject matter and a/v stimuli need to be taken into account; monospectrum vs. the variety we allow in the censorship laws of the US. When you take into account how much certain groups of the population form their perspective and beliefs based on the entertainment they consume. Using such a narrow allowance of information and pov’s create subconscious ideologies and false norms in impressionable groups of society that can lead to them acting out due to the heavy technical ability to, for lack of better term, “brainwash” via stimulating areas of the brain with audio visual content. It’s easy enough using specific wavelength of colors tinting the image mixed with nuero-stimulative music to a level that it becomes hypnotic and that has been the norm of film and tv for a while to immerse viewers in a specific experience.. It just got to a point where there was only one narrative or perspective being focused on or allowed (in combination with the audio/visual stimulation) and that is when it can get manipulative. So, very happy to see independent produced material being brought to distribution again as it allows for freedom of expression and creative control of your project.
