AV1 interview I have explained many time in the past how important AV1 is for Meta's Family-of-Apps (FoA - Facebook, Instagram, Messenger) Quality of Experience. In this article, I explain further how: - AV1 is inexpensive to encode; SVT-AV1 is an open-source SW encoder that offers many speed settings, going as low as x264-veryfast - AV1 can be decoded by many mobile phones; either in HW (e.g. iPhone 15+, or Pixel 6+) or through the ever-improving SW open-source decoder (Dav1d), by a growing share of many other phones, thanks to the many contributions of the open-source community (VideoLAN) - Facebook and Instagram have been continuously expanding AV1 coverage, accounting now for the majority of video bytes watched on many devices - AV1 is ideal for VoD, Live and RTC applications Read more in the full article - and don't forget to share your thoughts! Digital twin-based universe (complexiverse): Where real world and virtual/digital world are unified The concept of a virtual world is something we conceived and subsequently created. Cyberspace emerged in 1982, by a science fiction writer William Gibson. It refers to a computer-generated virtual world entirely separate from reality. In this new world, users could solely focus on computer-mediated communication. Moreover, all online activities were conducted in an environment isolated from the real world. Last night, I had the privilege of listening to Sir Tim among other distinguished speakers. Sir Tim, who returned to CERN, the birthplace of the Web, shared his vision for the future on the organisation's 70th anniversary. Few are aware of the massive impact of his work on the world today. If the Web stops, life on Earth stops, literarily. Despite this profound truth, we are surrounded by unparalleled opportunities. Science, technology, and our collective knowledge hold the power to address humanity's greatest challenges. From restoring ecosystems and fixing the climate to fostering peace and resilience in the face of pandemics. Open science and AI will be instrumental in addressing these issues. Educating the public on AI, ensuring free access to information, and safeguarding personal data are crucial steps to harness the potential of science and technology for the greater good.
