I've heard this from at least three environmental justice leaders who are people of color. "The big, white-led environmental orgs take up all the money in the movement, and then want us to be the bodies and the 'diversity' for their actions. Then they're nowhere to be found when we're organizing around issues in our communities." Whew. That's hard to hear right? Sometimes we (white organizing leaders) think we're doing all the right things by inviting POC-led organizations to our actions and paying attention to the diversity of the crowd. I mean, climate change affects all of us right? (Ummm. . . yes, but those effects are different for people in historically excluded communities than in middle-class, white communities.) Are we partnering with environmental leaders of color? Or are we asking them to mobilize for us? Are we organizing with the people most affected by climate change? Or are we grafting our communities' needs on to them? That's what white supremacy culture does to all of us. It teaches us that there is one way to be. And that one way colors everything. That's why Catherine Shieh, Janedra Sykes and I talk about disrupting white supremacy culture, more than we talk about DEI. We're going to be talking about it two weeks from today. In our "Disrupting White Supremacy Culture in Nonprofits" workshop, we talk about where the characteristics of white supremacy culture show up in our campaigns, projects and organizations where we least expect them. Don’t tell Green Living Magazine, but Global Shapers Phoenix isn’t even a non-profit. We’re just a group of young people that want to curate a better world ?? But that hasn’t stopped us from being nominated alongside some of Arizona’s largest non-profits that have full time staff and massive budgets. That hasn’t stopped us from moving hundreds of pounds of litter from Arizona parks to recycling centers. That hasn’t stopped us from planting trees that will remove carbon from the air while growing produce in food deserts. That hasn’t stopped us from registering young voters across the country.
