Wait, am I really writing a post about football/soccer? That isn't about Ted Lasso, Welcome to Wrexham or the brilliant National Theatre production of Dear England?! I, whose knowledge of "The Beautiful Game" is limited to what I've gleaned from the above (oh, and the Lloyd Webber musical of that name!)?! England player Declan Rice is from my town, so this year I had an extra reason to pay attention to the Euro 2024 championship. If, like me, you don't follow the sport you may have missed this tactic from (then) manager Gareth Southgate's playbook: Taking a penalty kick is a high-pressure situation, made worse by the long, lonely walk back to your team if it doesn't go well. Southgate simply assigned every penalty-taker with a buddy to walk out to them after taking their shot. According to Damian Hughes there are three pillars of high-performing cultures: ? feeling a sense of purpose ? feeling that you belong ? feeling psychologically safe Having a buddy is not just a kindness, it helps build resilience and supports those pillars. Score! Push yourself, take risks, work under pressure, focus on the task ... but with the confidence your team not only believe in you but will _proactively_ support you, whatever the result. We like to think of ourselves as team players, but what are we doing proactively that has real impact and drives high performance? That's something I'll be thinking about this week.
