Eighty-two years ago today, March 13th in 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United States Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or "K-9 Corps." The top canine hero of World War II was Chips, a German Shepherd who served with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Trained as a sentry dog, Chips broke away from his handlers and attacked an enemy machine gun nest in Italy, forcing the entire crew to surrender. The wounded Chips was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and the Purple Heart; all of which were later revoked due to an Army policy preventing official commendation of animals. It is a tale that captures the young reader's attention, making the war something that can begin to be understood. Seeing the story from Chips' perspective adds to the innocent feel of learning this information for the first time. Throughout the book certain words are italicized and these can easily be looked up in the glossary at the back of the book. Unfamiliar terms like Axis Powers, and Allied Forces, civilian, mascot, and medic become things the reader can understand. Certainly this book should be used in classrooms but for any child aged nine and up who has an interest in dogs, the military, our nation's wars, or history, Nancy West's "Chips a Hometown Hero" is a must have. An exciting, interesting (and fact based!) story that will delight all dog lovers as a special canine tale, I highly recommend this book! #ww2 #wardogs #k9 #k9dogs

Men always get the shit jobs… Kill the spider, take out the trash, bury the dog… Or if you live in Costa Rica like me - get the 10 pound iguana out of our bathroom… The one that snuck in through the dryer vent and bust out of the foil tubing while my wife was doing laundry… But that’s our role, our job, our purpose as fathers and husbands. Because if we didn’t… then our wives and children could not fully embrace and realize their passion or purpose. Men are servants, providers and protectors - paving the way for humanity’s evolution One family at a time. It’s a lot like the ground force commander in the military… The officer provides the resources and enables his men to preform the mission. The officer focuses up and out. While the enlisted team sargeant executes the target and manages the team. Each role is only possible when the other role is fully committed to their lane. And that’s why I love doing the shit job. Because it means my wife, my kids, can realize and act upon their full potential as humans. But… These damn iguana are huge down here! #veterans #unapologetic #alpha #freedom
